He also had his own tv show in the 1970s, albeit not for very long. He's probably best known for playing Rachel's father on Friends.

George Laurer, the man who made barcodes (UPCs) readable and commercially useable, died at age 94 in Wendell, North Carolina, on Thursday, December 5, 2019.

The first use of a UPC was on a pack of Wrigley's Juicy Fruit chewing gum in Ohio in 1974. In the dark ages, cashiers had to look at the price of an item and punch it into the cash register, but we survived.

Who do you think you are posting to here?
We all remember the cashier asking US what the price was on some peculiar item that no one else ever bought. I remember being the kid given the job to remember that price. Then the cashier had to either trust the kid, or call for a price check.
Then the scanners came. We had to remember all the prices and take our best guess at the product that invoked the dreaded, inevitable, beep of ignorance.

He played in a boatload of movies. I always remember the way he explained how he came home broke from the track to his son after being ahead $1000+ at one point, in the movie "29th Street".

Most people will prob know him from Do The Right Thing but my favorite role of his was in 2 Days in the Valley.

If you've never seen it then you're missing out on a great scene involving Charlize Theron.
