Willis Reed, 80

NY Knicks great and 2-time NBA champion. My dad used to take me to MSG to watch that early 70s er Knicks team. So much fun.

Strange, was just thinking of him watching Creighton the other night. He was coach when I was student manager of Drake's team, both were in the Valley at that time. Remember a game where Drake unexpectedly bombed them in an otherwise forgettable season.

Whenever anyone asks what NBA team I root for, I always say, 1970 Knicks!

Michael Lerner, the busy Oscar-nominated character actor who had memorable turns as bombastic types in Barton Fink, Harlem Nights, Eight Men Out and so much more, has died. He was 81.

RIP Marc Gilutin. OG poker player and gamer. Hosted the O8 game at the Bike for years. Musician, manager, AR man. AKA Occupant and Apecage.

Great guy to play poker with. Great guy to talk music with. A lot of the old timers here knew him.

Insane to the core. Great tie. Interesting stains on the suit which I bet are from spills of liquor.

I hope his body was tossed off the cliffs of Dover when he died to feed the fishes.

Jerry Springer, dead at age 79, on Thursday, April 27, 2023. Despite his TV image, he was a gentle, warm and compassionate man, a good mayor, and a TV news anchor who went undercover and lived with homeless people to report on their situation long before things like that were popular, he cared deeply for his daughter, and he was an excellent attorney, fair and reasonable, representing his clients' interests without being obnoxious. I met him as opposing counsel on many occasions and was involved with wage negotiations with him when he was the mayor of Cincinnati.

The best thing about Jerry Springer is the story about him paying a prostitute with a check that was used against him later; this is back when he was legit too, rising young star mayor. He was a fascinating man and an important cultural figure.

I also saw that Dick Groat died, really good Pirate from a little before my time.

Groat. Listed as 5' 11" but looked smaller. Played hoops for Duke and the Pistons in the NBA. Played for the 1960 Pirates World Champions that sent my Yankee-fan friends kicking and screaming to their long winter of discontent. What a player. He would have tortured teams playing the shift. As good as Rizzuto at placing the ball. Overlooked for HOF.

It was a bad check, it bounced and that's what got him in trouble, the sex worker went to the DA and complained. Interestingly, after resigning and pleading to the charge, he ran for mayor again and was re-elected.

That's a lovely tribute. Thanks, Gioco.
