Looking thru the Wikipedia obits like I do, I came across Freya. So I'd just watched this ridiculous Viking movie called Valhalla Rising and I'm thinking is that the Freya god-lady in Norse mythology? But no, it's a walrus (!?) who, oddly, the authorities seem to have just "euthanized," weird times. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freya_(walrus)

Normally, this would be a request to not send me down the wikipedia hole, but then I got to this: "After repeated warnings from Norwegian authorities, Freya was euthanized by the Norwegian Directorate of Fisheries on the morning of 14 August 2022..."

Now I'm about to log on to youtube to look for mopic of The Directorate giving Freya her multiple warnings. Did these warnings involve scolding? How about time-outs? In School Suspensions? Detentions? Breakfast Club? The day's productivity has been lost.

Wolfgang Petersen, bad-ass German director of many great films, at 81.

I once had a meeting with him back in the 90s when he was briefly attached to a screenplay I wrote. He told me he liked it, but that he wasn't really interested in any more military movies.

He was a nice guy.

Everyone (just about) rooted for the Chiefs back then.

Great team
Great QB
Great coach

RIP

Can't remember the reason, but the Chiefs were my first favorite. Would've been about that era, maybe I heard of their winning SB or something.

In addition to his playing, always liked the old Inside the NFL show he was on to see highlights before ESPN/NFL Network had them all.

rubbed it on the temples
of your high and tight fade?
do you remember

how june didn't think
wally smelled like doody?
the everly brothers smothered
our tom, dick, and
hairy brothers with the product of
their constant bother?
my follicles remember

From context I would think you considered the photo above to be a "haircut", but it definitely looks styled to me.

I didn’t know what pomade was till I asked my mom after hearing the word in a movie.

When I was a kid (and every kid carried a comb) you were either one or the other.

Barbara Ehrenreich, the author of Nickled and Dimed, a chronicle of her three months attempting to live on minimum wage jobs, at 81. She also wrote on the destructive effect of positive thinking.

That phrase says so much about Ehrenreich. I read and liked Nickled and Dimed, still own a copy. As a conservative I agree with a lot of the earnest leftos on the problems but come to the exact opposite conclusion about how to solve them.

I haven't read her book on positive thinking, but am on the wait list for it at my public library. So far, Paul Fussell is my favorite writer against it -- maybe in The Dumbing of America? I still quote him when people tell me to "Have a nice day!"

Well, you know, everything happens for a reason.

Like who the **** actually believes that?

And I should read more Fussell.

To paraphrase a meme, everything happens for a reason, and the reason is that I'm stupid and make poor decisions.

Or even worse, someone you love dies, or the person you love walks out on you, or you break your leg, and some idiot mouths that everything happens for a reason.

Really? Don't say anything but "I'm sorry. How can I help?"

Is this "positive thinking" you guys are talking about the nonsense that Oprah was pushing several years ago? Seemed like that was "if you wish upon a star" sort of thinking, rather than setting a goal and understanding the actions necessary to achieve that goal.

I didn't follow it at all, maybe I'm way off or oversimplifying.

I think it started in the 1920s as a wishful thinking movement and has been around ever since.
