there may be some Jimmy Smith upthread, but probably later during his 'zamboni blues' phase.
this particular song is as much about Turrentine's greasy tenor, Duck Bailey tickling the snare and cymbal, and Kenny Burrell strumming fat rubber bands with his thumbs in the background.

it's a great piece

here's Jimmy Smith of a different sort

i've listened to lots of Allman Brothers songs, both recorded and live, and you can't tell me Jimmy Smith didn't have a direct influence on Gregg.
if it doesn't automatically start from the beginning, please use my apology wrench to rewind it.

edit to give full credit:
Quentin Warren - Guitar
Billy Hart - Drums

Sunday Morning Jazz

Not known for performing covers, Monk made an album entitled Thelonious Monk Plays Duke Ellington in 1955. I believe it was recorded before Brilliant Corners (coming soon to this station), which was released later and may be better known, but his Ellington stuff is great fun to listen to.

Who doesn't love Caravan?

so complex nobody could complete a single take.

rebounding back to Jimmy Smith
wonder what percentage of living humans have heard this rhythm in one form or another

not every song on that album is a gem
but these two are
the open and the close
the first and the last
Wilton Felder on bass guitar
if you don't know him please look him up
if only to close that gap in your musical knowledge
you may quickly realize you've heard him countless times

how to make the right notes sound so wrong
or the wrong notes sound so right
my constant thought about monk and the others who elected to tag along during his explorations in music at this time

what the hell were they thinking
and why does it sound like the exact correct thing to play at that particular point in time?

great stuff - dreamy - will take you away from reality if you let it - and if like me you sometimes want to escape reality

Miles Davis named one of his tracks John McLaughlin - their electric jazz stuff was fabulous - legendary

it took me a while to warm up to the electric stuff
my discovery of jazz is all retroactive, i didn't live it live
and the path from kind of blue to this head space benefits from all the steps inbetween

edit: a bit of background on the track above from one of the top comments:
Quote:
This is for all intents and purposes a "best of" or more accurately "best bits" version -- Miles & Co. recorded 5 different takes of this particular musical idea (all of which can be found on the Jack Johnson Complete Sessions box set) and then later Miles and long time producer Teo Macero took what they thought/felt were the most successfully executed parts of each take, spliced them together, reprocessed the sound into what you're hearing now, and as icing on this particular cake, took John McLoughlin guitar and moved it back and forth from left channel to right and back again continuously using an automatic switching device.

Dave Holland played double-bass on pretty much every electric Miles recording.
here he is in 2018, with Zakir Hussain and Chris Potter.

you may remember Zakir from McLaughlin's Shakti (you posted it before)
the three were touring under 'Crosscurrents' trio as recently as last year.
