I've got a great Jimmy Knepper album from the 70s and I can't find it or even remember the name of it. I think he was mainly known for playing with Mingus.
people know him from his pop hit but he was so much more than that
he gets a great tone from his horn - a lot of power
it always amazes me that the old stuff - when it's great stuff - it never sounds old - it always sounds fresh
the link below the track offers a selection of his music

how about Pepper/Knepper! (not from the 70's but the world needs more baritone sax and trombone) Wynton Kelly, Doug Jones, and Elvin Jones help out, all you have (or should have) heard before.
yeah, i tend to lump jazz organ into the same group with jazz guitar and vibraphone.
as a rule i don't enjoy it, but there are exceptions. Baby Face and Grant Green are two of the exceptions.
Anyone here a fan of some of the excellent new crop of jazz saxophonists we've inherited the last few decades? Michael Brecker, Bob Berg, Chris Potter, Joel Frahm, Ben Wendel, Chad Lefkowitz-Brown, Sam Dillon and others are regularly inspiring me
I'd like to hear a mix tape, I'm unfamiliar with most of them. I'm still trying to understand Charlie Parker...so maybe some of their more accessible stuff...
Trane just stomps the yard. Giant Steps was recorded a year earlier and this is right around the time when he moved away from Miles and solidified his own career.
Wynton Kelly, Jimmy Cobb, and Paul Chambers filling out the rhythm section.
