Re: Jazz: America's Music

I'd heard of the Fairview Baptist Church Brass Band But I'd never heard the Fairview Baptist Church Brass Band. This video is from 2015, which is about 40 years after they were forced to disband, so I'm not sure who we are watching here, but I'd say that these guys know what they are doing.

Plus, it's Li'l Liza Jane...

Note that the sax player throws in Shortnin' Bread for no extra charge. This is a fortuitous coincidence, since it was my world-famous Li'l Liza Jane - Shortnin' Bread harmonica medley that allowed me to meet The World's Nicest Lady Police Officer when she suggested that I stop playing it, but we'll leave that story for another time.

Sunday Morning!

Thanks Phat; you are a gentleman and a scholar. Great wake me up Jazz.

The song reminded me of The Oregon Jazz Band. See the wiki page link below. My father had (and now I have) three vinyl albums of these guys and they are good and fun and very talented. And mostly unknown. Like the gentlemen above. Dixieland Jazz is what I want played at my gravesite when I'm tossed to the worms and bugs, sans coffin.

Re: Jazz: America's Music

because i have a huge man crush on Ron Carter (and Tony Williams, and Tommy Flanagan...and jazz trios with piano, bass and drums). this rhythm section is one degree of separation between several decades of jazz giants.
recorded in 1983 but could have easily been recorded in 1953 or 1963.

Re: Jazz: America's Music

while you could say it's not specifically jazz, this is currently playing while i tie up the last few loose ends for our trip to Spain in a few weeks.

Friday Night in San Francisco
Al Di Meola
John McLaughlin (from electric Miles fame)
Paco de Lucia

if this is something that interests you, here's the full concert from the next night. Bill Graham with the intro.

Re: Jazz: America's Music

a Wayne Shorter composition, originally released on his album Adam's Apple.
Recorded in October 1966 and released on Miles Smiles in 1967

Miles Davis – Trumpet
Wayne Shorter – Tenor saxophone
Herbie Hancock – Piano
Ron Carter – Double bass
Tony Williams – Drums

Williams and Carter play african based rhythm combinations not yet commonly heard in the world of jazz, including 12/8 compound quadruple meter.

Miles sums it up at the end with a comment to producer Teo Macero:
Quote:
Hey Teo...you can take ANY parts of that you want
Herbie's response:
Quote:
and throw them right into the trash

for comparison, the Wayne Shorter version from Adam's Apple recorded about six months before the Miles Smiles version

Wayne Shorter – Tenor saxophone
Herbie Hancock – Piano
Reggie Workman - Bass
Joe Chambers - Drums

Re: Jazz: America's Music

^^^ I've been studying chord progressions. This from Wikipedia...

Quote:
The earliest known use of rhythm changes was by Sidney Bechet in his September 15, 1932[4] recording of "Shag" with his "New Orleans Feetwarmers" group.
