That 1st track Recollections, early on anyway, reminds me of one psychedelic thing that Bowie did on, I think, his Low album.
It's a trip to see Titans in their respective games, Beatles and Miles Davis, tangibly change and arc with the counterculture of their times, but it makes perfect sense.
Everyone's influenced. I much prefer this track from Big Fun to anything I heard on Bitches Brew. (album is too 'out.' Zero melody)
and I love out playing (Vernon Reid one of my favorite guitarists), but it's got to resolve in the 'in' at some point.
are you familiar with Jaco's work with Weather Report?
or Jaco and Scofield?
of course the Herbie classics with Paul Jackson on bass. the last time i saw the Headhunters with Paul playing he broke two bass strings...yes, two bass strings, and kept playing while his stagehand restrung the bass from behind.
and also includes Roy Haynes, who's still kicking at 92
Haynes is in one of the most tantalizing jazz photographs ever. i don't believe there are known recordings of these shows at The Open Door in Greenwich Village in 1953, but Haynes is shown with Bird, Monk, and Mingus. This is also around the time Jack Kerouac frequented the Open Door leading up to The Subterraneans.
