You have been a lucky guy, John. In more ways than one. Even it don't feel like it, sometimes.

perfect.

written by George Gershwin for Porgy and Bess in 1935, it is believed to be one of the most covered songs in history.

Billie Holiday had a hit with it in 1936

Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong in 1957

Miles in 1959 on Porgy and Bess arranged with Gil Evans. Cannonball on alto, Paul Chambers on bass and Philly Joe Jones and Jimmy Cobb on drums

and it's obligatory to post the Janis version...how could i not?

and now for something completely different. a previous post mentioned Milestones

here it is
apparently there aren't full album videos available on youtube, so we'll just have to piece it together.

Miles Davis – trumpet, piano (on "Sid's Ahead")
Julian "Cannonball" Adderley – alto saxophone
John Coltrane – tenor saxophone
Red Garland – piano
Paul Chambers – double bass
Philly Joe Jones – drums

Dr Jekyll is the highlight of this album. the fastest pace you can imagine

Ornette from the late 50's. he wanted it to be titled Focus on Sanity, but he acquiesced to his producer. Ornette is literally playing a plastic saxophone. no chord structures and this is one of the transitional beginnings to free jazz.

Alto Saxophone – Ornette Coleman
Cornet – Don Cherry
Double Bass – Charlie Haden
Drums – Billy Higgins

Peace, which begins around 9:15, is both a transitional song in this particular album and a transitional song in the world of jazz. it's likely impossible to understand how broadly this song influenced the sound of jazz moving forward...
...which moves right into Focus on Sanity starting around 18:00. it's apparent why Ornette thought this should be the album title. at times it's as fast or faster (and as tight) than any hard bop to date, and at the same time it starts to explore the potential of free jazz.

A "Second Line" from the Olympia Brass Band, who I hadn't heard since -- the 70's? -- gotta love the internet!
