Jabo -- You ever considered putting this stuff on some sheets? I'd totally buy a few of these

IDK if there are copyright issues.

I've played piano for about 14 years but I never had the talent to make my own music per-se. Do you have any advice on how one can get started in learning and doing the creative covers that you've made?

Not really, since I never plan out my playing totally. Most of the stuff played with my left hand is totally improvised based on the chords of the song. And some of the covers are played from sheet music I've found on the internet.

Maybe if there were more listeners/people who wanted the sheets I'd have more of a motivation to write it down, but so far, no.

Jabo, I'm digging the hell out of what you do, man. Good stuff, and you know when and how to let the music breathe, which a lot of musicians simply don't get. Keep it up.

Thanks man. Appreciate the kind words.

The thing you point about letting the music breathe, I guess 9 years of training with one of the best Finnish pianists as a teacher has helped. Classical and pop/jazz stuff. Most of the stuff on YouTube is just stuff I play for my own fun and figure out the arrangements myself. Don't know yet how I will pursue to continue my studies among music. I'll start my actual studies in the University of Technology next fall, and I'll be moving out at the same time. Have to weigh my options and see what I want to do.

Tried to create a mashup medley of two hiphop songs, Diddy's new song Coming Home and a bit older Fort Minor track, Where'd You Go.

Okay, just checked out the chords with a guitar, listening to the song, trying to get a hang of it and then tried it on the piano. Who knows, you may find it here in a couple of days in some form, seemed pretty simple.

Whattaaa, just found out this. Really surprised me. Never pictured you as musician which you without a doubt are.

You're playing really well! great covers sir

Somewhat regretting that I didnt start playing guitar when i had a chance and the time at high schol after giving up on hockey. Obv still not too late for that but i highly doubt that id have the discipline.
How long (or how many hours) did it take for you to train the basic etc to be able to be good enough to play some easy songs though with guitar?

Fickle

It doesn't take too long, as most pop/rock songs just use a few basic chords. Start by learning the easy, non-barre chords - C, D, E, G, A, Em, Am, Dm. This will get your surprisingly far, as far as being able to play songs goes. Play around with them, learn different rhythms to play, etc and you should be able to get it in maybe a month.

Oh yeah, one of the most fun songs on the piano is "Philosophy" by Ben Folds. Not sure if you've heard it before but it has a sick piano part.

Definitely need to start listening to more of his stuff. He's got a funny technique, looking at some live performances. Definitely not classicaly trained. :P

Have to thank you for reminding me to start listening to him. According to Last.fm in the past week I've listened to his songs over 150 times, whereas no other band has more than 30 listens. Also been viewing tons of YouTube clips, including the WASO concert. Great stuff.

Favorite songs atm Fred Jones Part 2, Brick, Kylie From Connecticut, Bitches Ain't ****, The Luckiest, Adelaide, Cologne and Philosophy, to name a few. Great songwriter and pianist, with a lot of fun parts for the piano in most songs. Already got a pretty good version of FJP2 down.

I figured you would enjoy Ben Folds. Our (yours and mine) playing styles are pretty similar, and I like Ben Folds and his playing quite a lot. These sheet music books are both pretty good, if you're into that sort of thing - I have them both:

Rockin' The Suburbs
Songs for Silverman - As far as I know, actual transcriptions of the piano parts of the studio versions

Yeah, definitely need sheet music to play some of his songs, just too much going on to pick up by ear. Found some sheets available for free download too.

Awesome!

Def look forward to any Ben Folds stuff if you get to it.

The Luckiest is a slower ballad but a great song too!

Thanks,
