Mini trip report of my westward ho roadtrip. Just got back yesterday and have a zillion pictures to go through. Hopefully the ones I post here don't muck up the thread too much? Doesn't matter we get a new thread next week
The trip was a blast and the scenery was spectacular. We left the Chicago area early Saturday morning and made it to North Platte Nebraska about 11.5 hours later. Not much going on in North Platte
But the next morning departed for Estes Park CO which is the gateway to Rocky Mountain N.P. We got there about 11am but didn't have access to the park until 1pm. Everything about Estes Park and Rocky Mountain was frustrating as could be although beautiful. Rocky Mountain NP requires timed entry permits which are a pita. We got ours almost as soon as they were available and there were still almost sold out even a month earlier the day they were made available. Our pass for day one was 1pm which was fine but the earliest we could get for day 2 was 11am.
Estes Park was an absolute mad house Total gridlock on both the streets and sidewalks. They had to have traffic cops directing traffic all day. That "pent up" demand theory was playing out in real time and that little town had 10 times more people in it than it can comfortably hold. But in any event Rocky Mountain NP is terrific and did some very brutal hiking up mountains in there.
The next night we stayed in Grand Lake CO which is on the other side of Rocky Mountain. This town didn't have quite the crowds or congestion that Estes park had. From Grand Lake we headed to the Grand Junction/Fruita area to check out the Colorado National Monument. I didn't really know anything about this place but it too was beautiful. It is a National Park that has a very scenic 26 mile drive between GJ and Fruita and we stayed that night in Fruita.
From there it was off to Moab which was only about an hour and half away. We took the scenic drive along the Colorado River which was also spectacular. This drive could be a National Park for its beauty but its not its just a road out west.
We got to Moab early enough to spend a full day at Arches but first grabbed some breakfast then headed to Arches only to get to experience "pent up" demand crowds again and were greeted with a PARK FULL sign with rangers having everyone turn around. Luckily Canyonland was only 30 miles away and that's where we went. Canyonlands are spectacular as well. We did some shorts hikes and plenty of exploring.
The next morning we headed to Arches very early not wanting to get shut out again.. The place is awesome and we did 2 days in Arches getting in early doing plenty of hiking and exploring.
The town of Moab is seriously understaffed. A few restaurants never reopened from covid and the ones that did all have help wanted signs up and the town is jam packed with no vacancy on every motel.
Bottom line is people are flooding these parks and areas now that people can get out to travel again and I think it's only gonna get worse as the summer rolls on. Covid cabin fever is for real and people are gonna flood places like this like never before.
Maybe the most distressing message for society today is that the National Park service has to remind people to **** in the toilet and not on the floor
If anyone is planning a similar trip this year plan in advance and be prepared for HUGE crowds. I had a blast though and I had never seen any of these awesome places before.
