Went to wakes the past two Saturdays. My former office mate for 15 years died after only a few months retirement. He was a Ph.D. in Biology, did differential equations for relaxation, read post-modern theory and poetry, and had a bad habit of buying the same books twice because he forgot he had them. He was also like a father to me, and, except for my dad, the nicest man I knew. I will miss him calling me "Son."

Thanks, RED. I'm trying. Will be in New Orleans in two weeks for yet another conference, and I hear that town has a few bars and some good food. It's Fall Out, Boys (And Girls); LC Thread

I'll be at the Langlois thing this Friday, Ray. Saw all the notices but thanks for the heads up.

Langlois is great. B&B Farm supply run by two old ladies. Spoon restaurant. And a year ago an old musician started a coffee shop and roasts his own coffee. Good stuff. And the Langlois store sells $5 growlers of beer. Its a virtual Valhalla.

My fellow pog refugee! Bigger, you know I still talk to McAvoy on Skype. He's out in Midland now working as a "roustabout" on oil rigs, raising his kids and whatnot. We talk a lot about country music, which he knows surprisingly well for someone born in Canada. Still drinking a little too much, it's safe to say!

I have a dear friend who believes ghosts exist. In fact, two people last night mentioned they felt a strange presence on the third floor of a home we were in last night. I read that over 40% of Americans believe in ghosts, and more Brits believe in ghosts than in God.

For some reason, I suspect few here do. But I thought I would check.

I've seen ghosts but don't believe in them. They're sort of like beauty -- I've seen beauty but can't buy a pound of it at the supermarket. And also like beauty, they exist only in the eye of the beholder.

Brits are crazy, you can't believe anything they say. And Americas are crazier.

I don't worry much about ghosts or gods or God or believe in such rot. They have inspired some great and not-so-great literature and art and music.
