London

I wander thro' each charter'd street,
Near where the charter'd Thames does flow.
And mark in every face I meet
Marks of weakness, marks of woe.

In every cry of every Man,
In every Infants cry of fear,
In every voice: in every ban,
The mind-forg'd manacles I hear

How the Chimney-sweepers cry
Every blackning Church appalls,
And the hapless Soldiers sigh
Runs in blood down Palace walls

But most thro' midnight streets I hear
How the youthful Harlots curse
Blasts the new-born Infants tear
And blights with plagues the Marriage hearse

-- William Blake

I like how Blake uses "blackening" and then "appalls." The etymology of appalls is to make pale, to whiten. So the contrast with black and white that leads to horrifying.

Also consider "mark," which can mean to remark or notice but also to actively "mark," as if the very act of notice caused a mark, a mark of weakness and woe.

please help me understand the meaning of charter'd in the blake context
reading between the lines it seems regulatory and political, but that's just a guess

Charter'd means the streets are laid out in a pattern, or at least that's what my old poetry teacher said.

But it does seem to fit with was, for Blake, the horrors of the industrial revolution. The church and the state are both guilty of explotation. Chimney sweeps were young boys, no more than seven or eight years old, who could fit in chimneys.

I took it as contrasting state control over something constructed and something natural.

Quote:
Charter

noun

a written grant by the sovereign or legislative power of a country, by which a body such as a city, company, or university is founded or its rights and privileges defined.

verb

grant a charter to (a city, company, university, or other body).

after ample time pondering, seems like an intentional contrast between 'modern' streets charter'd for efficiency and thus trial revolutions occured in manufacturing, compared to the time before when another means of transit was charter'd to float fossils for heat.
throughout either process anything with a white surface quickly became covered in soot

Also, the Thames is fundamental, and to conjure up an image of old London you only have to mention it. I have lived about 100 yards away from it for the past 15 years.

On Fridays (and only Fridays) I eat and drink whatever the hell I want. Hadn't had Chinese food in quite a while and there is a new Chinese joint real close by. So I tried it and it was good. But the real test will be tomorrow. I always get an order of potstickers which I eat the next day. Why? Who knows thats just the way I do Chinese If they are good I will know if this new place is a keeper or not.

Glad the Dodgers won but already miss baseball. At least I know my White Sox will be better next year!

I keep losing things. Not quite at Elizabeth Bishop level but losing things nonetheless.
