So this happens today. My friend is going to take me shopping, but first she goes to some workout thing. We are also supposed to be on a group zoom meeting, but she's running a little. She knows the code to open the gate to my house and knows I never lock the door to my apartment, so she can let herself in. She comes into my living room, sits next to me on the couch, and we both reply to questions. And they could see that I didn't get up to let her in.

Probably only one person knew she was also there to take me shopping, too. Rumors spread quickly in academia.

You're done for, Johnny. Once you get a bad reputation, your phone won't stop ringing. It'll be wall to wall hot chicks from here on out.

Naw. I won't get a bad reputation and most know I'm pretty harmless.

Oh, and at the Newport Auto Week, I saw the brand new Bugatti Veyron. Other dealers brought along five Aston-Martins and a host of other exotic and concept cars. And Jay Leno driving his '65 Mustang.

Newport auto week sounds very cool, wish I could’ve been there!

Speaking of bad reputation, didn’t Joan Jet have one?

I know I do; been that way since I was a Junior in High School. With no let up.

trusting a friend with household access as if a relative sounds delightful
also suggest immediately removing all sticky notes with computer passwords from the premesis

It is nice. One of my neighbors has a key to my place, just in case something needs tending when I'm out of town. I reciprocate when they are away.

It's a pretty nice setup so nobody comes home to a disaster.

To prepare my students to write a paper on the semiotics of fashion, I went to class today with a black fedora, sunglasses, a black paisley sport coat, black shirt and jeans, and black cowboy boots.

They barely batted an eye.

would you characterize the reaction as a miscarriage of fashion justice or more symbolic of reading high-browed liner notes

The fashion student who works in my local bar would probably argue that part of fashion's semiotics is the conveyance of gender, which she considers to be a performance. I asked her why young people are so interested in gender, and she said she's interested in it because she was treated differently to her brothers, which I thought was a good answer. Is that what they're all doing, trying to make sense of their childhoods?

They are either trying to make sense of them or hanging on to them for dear life.

I was raised so permissively that for a long time I had trouble understanding why people rebelled so late in life. But it's never too late imo.

Aren't we all? Not really. I know what my parents gave me, for good or ill. Mostly good. They let me walk two miles to the Park Theater in Cranston, RI, when I was nine years old to see Lawrence of Arabia.

I resist saying any work of art changed my life, but Lawrence, Roger Cornan Poe films, and science fiction movies certainly piqued my lifelong interest in film.

I like the aurora pictures better than the suit, but that's also cool. Dom describes it well.

I get to drive again starting Wednesday. I'm only going to be a week short of the six months.

The bad part is not being able to do things on your own.

The great part is knowing how much friends and family care and help without being asked.

I love history, especially US history. My 3 favorite subjects of US history are The Revolution, The Guilded Age, and WWII Pacific theater. I decided to finally start rereading my extensive history collection because I havent in years and there is so much I have forgotten.

I started with WWII Pacific. I started with Ian Tolls trllogy which is the best all encompassing work of that portion of WWII. I am 2/3's through the first volume which brought me up to the battle of Midway. The battle of Midway is easily the most important battle of the Pacific theater and possibly due to its consequence the most important battle of the entire war since it allowed the US to really go with the Europe first strategy they planned on.

Anyway I ramble. I am a couple of Friday afternoon drinks deep But I just fired up Midway (1976 version). I haven't seen it in a while and it isn't good enough. But it is better than the 2019 version. I really wish someone (Hanks/Spielberg maybe?) would give this the HBO treatment and do a proper 6-10 episode mini series. And I would even rather see that of the Battle of Leyte Gulf get that. If I ever make it to 9 figures (very doubtful!) I will commision writers and produce both of these!

Midway airport in Chicago is named after the battle. In one of the corridors they have a mini museum dedicated to the battle.
