You know most singers should include the verse in the song:

My story is much too sad to be told
But practically, everything leaves me totally cold
The only exception I know is the case
When I'm out on a quiet spree, fighting vainly the old ennui
And I suddenly turn and see your fabulous face.

--Cole Porter

And one you almost never hear. Name this song.

Poets often use many words to say a simple thing
It takes thought and time and rhyme
To make a poem sing
With music and words I've been playing

For you I have written this song
To be sure that you know what I'm saying
I'll translate as I go along

I guessed correctly, perhaps because I am old enough to have heard it on the radio.

I never thought Michiko would come back
after she died. But if she did, I knew
it would be as a lady in a long white dress.
It is strange that she has returned
as somebody's dalmatian. I meet
the man walking her on a leash
almost every week. He says good morning
and I stoop down to calm her. He said
once that she was never like that with
other people. Sometimes she is tethered
on their lawn when I go by. If nobody
is around, I sit on the grass. When she
finally quiets, she puts her head in my lap
and we watch each other's eyes as I whisper
in her soft ears. She cares nothing about
the mystery. She likes it best when
I touch her head and tell her small
things about my days and our friends.
That makes her happy the way it always did.

Been to the Venetian years ago and enjoyed their silly, I’m really in Italy now, food court. It’s done with mirrors!

You need to revisit Italy, it is as close to paradise as you can come on planet Earth.

I love Jack Gilbert's work.. That's a stunning poem. Are we really ever alone?

I had never heard of Jack Gilbert until this showed up in my email this morning. I agree that it's stunning -- this poem tells a story nearly identical to one I told my daughter years ago -- and I was floored by it.

When you're younger and have children, it seems like you only get together with friends a few times a year.

When you get older, like many of us here, do you hang out with old friends more?

Oh, and here's what I'm doing today. Switching out summer for winter clothes. Installing a new toilet seat. Going out for dinner with three of the women I work or worked with. Going to a play after that (the performance is sponsored by a scholarship committee started by our late friend about twenty years ago).

I hope changing the toilet seat isn't the highlight.

I’m drinking today. I don’t worry about my clothes; I always look grand no matter what I wear. I have no comment on toilet seats . Civilized people don’t bring up this topic in normal conversation.

Anybody gonna wartch the fight tonight? I'm kinda looking forward to it. I don't really follow boxing but remember growing up in the era of Ali/Frasier/Foreman and it was really a big deal back then. Then Tyson came along and was an absolute beast. Since the end of the Tyson/Holyfield era I couldn't tell you anything about it?

But this seems like a spectacle and I am drawn to spectacle. I have a few bucks on Tyson just so I have some rooting interest. As an old guy I gotta root for the old man to show the young punk a lesson

It will likely disappoint on every level.

Don't drink too much or you might end up leaning over one of those toilet seats!

I'll be watching it too. Not expecting much. Podcast I listen to was making fun of some of the press conference and all the clips they played Tyson seemed very disinterested. Hopefully getting back in the ring perks him up a little.

I never drink too much. The play was terrible. We left at intermission. I should have followed the directions for putting on the toilet. But getting together with my colleagues, with whom I worked for over thirty years, was great.

And today I'm going to a book launch for my former colleague today. He's 80 and is publishing about his 20th book of poetry and translations.

And the fight was terrible.

In his prime, Ali was the most recognized person on earth. The pope was second.

Perfect. If I ever complete the coding of my 2+2 bot, this will be its response to all posts.

My friends have scattered to the winds. I don't live within 1000 miles of one. I see them never. But I get lots of emails from them. Thoughtful, often hilarious, well composed emails.

Email is the stunning success story of the Internet. With it, we don't have to see other decompose.

We need a forum field trip to Tokyo so we can see what a toilet seat is really capable of.
