Mutiny on the Bounty (for current events)
A Clockwork Orange (to see the future of their city)
Mad Max (to see the future of mankind)

Time After Time. Yeah, it's scifi, but it starts in the 1800's, and is about H.G. Wells traveling to the future (1970's), learning how to deal with the changes and it not being as good as he expected. In this case, they should be able to relate to the movie.

The Three Stooges Meet Hercules. Make sure to also show a couple of bugs bunny and foghorn and leghorn cartoons before the main attraction.

I still stand by this recommendation, but Jurassic Park would be another good one, not sure if Dinosaurs where discovered before 1800.

'Braveheart' is a great choice for that reason. Nice one.

To provide a somewhat serious answer...

I would go with 3 films that made my list in the other thread of favorite movies from each year:

1958 - A Night to Remember
1966 - A Man for All Seasons
1968 - Oliver!

10 Commandments was my 1st thought.

Then of course I went to Planet of the Apes, but no one would get the ending.

How about Highlander? The story of a guy that lives for hundreds of years. And kills people.

Since 2001 and interracial pr0n are already taken:

A Man for all Seasons, or,

King Lear with the same guy, Paul Scofield.

Edit: wait, Seasons was sniped. Back to the drawing board...

Edit edit: Flamenco Carmen.

Wait wait wait....

Emma isn't published until 1815, but let's show them Clueless and see if they get it....

H.M.S. Defiant (1962, directed by Lewis Gilbert, starring Alec Guinness ) - It would play on public interest in two recent (1797) mutinies in the British navy.

Alternatives: Adventures of Casanova set in 1790 Sicily or Don Quixote (1947 full version).

These are what I had in mind: A familiar subject while the new form of presentation provides the 'WOW!' factor.
