Ra_Z_Boy....yes, got some good recommends for ya..Have you seen Pandorum with Ben Foster? Here's the link for netflix and IMDB in case you don't have netflix. Also, my review for Pandorum: http://movies.netflix.com/WiMovie/Pa...?trkid=2361637 It is on instant watch at the moment.

Well this is a pretty tense, suspenseful and highly entertaining flick! I had a great time viewing this mysterious, edge of your seat, claustrophobia inducing tale that has a kind of Aliens meets The Descent feel. This also has serious mystery and plotting to go along with all of the edge of your seat action. A little gore and let me tell ya, what's on the ship will creep you out. Warning ahead though, people that don't care for that blue lighting and quick cuts may get annoyed but I sure didn't. To me, once you get used to the blue and steel hue with lots of dark shadows and blackness, you'll find your eyes get used to it. That wash actually fits with this film like a glove. You really don't want to know much going into this. I think the less you know the better off you are. Quaid is great in here and Ben Foster even better! This is his flick and he owns this character and this movie. Well done Mr. Foster, I had a good time. Just note that horror fans should enjoy this movie just as much as sci-fi buffs. Really, good times, go see this flick!

For all I know I already put this in here but what the Hell? Since it's on instant and you asked! Here's the IMDB link for Pandorum: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1188729/

Here's a really good sci/fi horror, lower budget by one of the Blair Witch directors but please don't fear the Blair Witch name, this was a fun and cool flick. ALTERED is the title, here's my quick review of Altered:
I loved this movie! Thought it was so much fun and you can tell that they had a good time making this. I really felt all of it came together perfectly, acting, directing, writing, music and special fx! What more could you want from a horror/sci-fi? This comes highly reccommended for lovers of the genre! Plus ladies, the lead guy in this is really hot!! Pop up some corn and enjoy the action!

Guess what? It's also on instant watch, netflix link here: http://movies.netflix.com/WiMovie/Al...?trkid=2361637
IMDB link: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0457275/ Directed by Eduardo Sanchez, half of the Blair Witch team. Again, don't let that stop you from viewing this fine sci/fi horror!

p.s. Thanks DieBitter! I have Attack the Block coming to the States soon and we're reviewing on the show. I've been looking forward to it. Kind of sounds like the British version of Altered. Altered being the redneck version.

I second Pandorum recommendation. It was reviewed very poorly, but I think it was underrated at the time. There are a couple scenes that really evoke and make you feel the tension, especially an early scene in which Foster gets into a rather claustrophobic situation. Plus, I enjoy Ben Foster immensely as an actor.

Me as well Degen! Foster is fab in just about everything I've seen him in including when the movie itself isn't good but Pandorum is a pretty tense and cool ride. Degen you should try Altered, might not be your style but it is a really cool, little film that is more impressive than the budget should have allowed.

I will check it out. I'm probably viewed as a blasphemer in horror circles, but I really disliked Blair Witch. I was generally bored, never believed the fear, didn't feel the tension or suspense and thought it was generally unintentionally comedic. I did like the ending, but felt it was rather out of place. So, are we afraid of the witch, or the apparent ghost of some child killer? In regards to the found footage genre, I enjoyed Rec, Quarantine (Rec more, however), Paranormal Activity, Cannibal Holocaust, even Cloverfield, more than Blair Witch.

Nah dude! Not a blasphemer, hence my warning that just because it's a Blair Witch director (lots of horror fans didn't like Blair Witch) doesn't mean it's anything like Blair Witch. It's not verite, it's good, old fashioned rednecks that get a bit more than they bargained for when trying to extract revenge on a being from another planet. I did like Blair Witch but I'm an even bigger fan of [REC] and Quarantine. The Quarantine director made a first person pov (sort of, it's kind of half and half) film prior to Quarantine called The Poughkeepsie Tapes and I like it a lot. Made years ago but never released, even to this day. Freakin' weird. Seriously, look up The Poughkeepsie Tapes. I mean wtf? here's the netflix link but it's useless. The film has been on save since 2007. I finally got to see it in 2008 sometime but really, what's the deal here? It's also another one of those like Blair Witch that silly people believed the tapes and the crimes were real. http://movies.netflix.com/WiMovie/Th...?trkid=2361637

I remember first seeing a preview for The Poughkeepsie Tapes in theater with my friends and we all couldn't wait for it to come out. Sadly it kept getting pushed back and back until one day I roamed the internet and watched it. Very cool/creepy.

Pandorum
is another sci-fi movie which is kinda cool. It is set in the future and crew members awake from hibernation after 8 years and find the ship is occupied by hostile aliens, and they have no clue wtf is going on.

IMDB: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1023500/

I can't recommend this one enough folks. The women are so cool in here, the makeup and their body movements. It's most excellent fun and I love Danny Dyer. Also Emily Booth gives Edward Scissorhands a run for his money in Doghouse! This director first gave us Evil Aliens, a fun, splatter/comedy: http://movies.netflix.com/WiMovie/Ev...?trkid=2361637 Not on instant but here's my netflix quick review for Evil Aliens:

You know when a movie opens with sex and an alien anal probe (close up and full on) what you are getting into! With that said, this comes with my highest recommendation for b-movie/splatter comedy. The gore is fun, practical, spilled and splattered throughout the film. The comedy is brainless, campy and it works for the most part. I was laughing! I liked the actors' performances. They hold up well in this over the top piece. With jabs at reality tv and internet, aliens and even a little Welsh racism thrown in the blender, the shake that comes out at the end is pretty sweet for b-movie lovers like me! Trust me on this, if you don't like mindless b-movies, camp or over the top then don't queue this bad boy. I hate to see negative reviews of this kind of creativity. The director set out to make this type of film and pulled it off with quite a bit of flair in my opinion. Definitely a movie that I would watch again and again when in need of a laugh on a depressing day!

As we talked about it on the other page, Severance is also Danny Dyer and I like it a lot. Here's the netflix link to that one http://movies.netflix.com/WiMovie/Se...?trkid=2361637 it's not on instant though.

Now for a really incredible, low budget, rape/revenge flick, Danny Dyer and Gillian Anderson in Straightheads aka Closure: http://movies.netflix.com/WiMovie/Cl...?trkid=2361637
Not an instant watch and here's my quick review for Closure:

This thing is brutal. It has a very short runtime so you end up getting right to the point in this flick! The connections in the plotline are a little to convenient but so what? The acting is what kicks this into the 4 star realm for me along with the sheer brutality of the original rape and beatings and the over the top revenge at the end!!! Wow! Gillian Anderson and Danny Dyer are both seriously amazing in this. I say if you like your revenge served up with undeniable brutality then queue this flick. I also felt Anderson's nudity in this film was tastefully done and not gratuitous. It's a really quick trip to the dark side of humanity! It also deals with the mental breakdown of the characters in a completely understandable way. Seriously people, don't bother if you don't like violence because violent it is!

IMDB: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0480011/

Give Doghouse a watch people, I think thus far, it's my favorite Danny Dyer film. I even liked it better than Severance though that one is a good ball of fun as well.

I wonder if you yanks will need subtitles for Attack the Block actually, the accents are pretty thick.

I'm from South London anyway, so all crystal clear to me.

Or should I say pukkah.

Diebitter, I don't think I'll need subtitles for Attack the Block, I got through Sexy Beast without subtitles and I only had a problem in two spots where Ray Winstone was really quietly speaking. I watched it without and then a few days later watched with subtitles to be sure I didn't miss anything in the dialogue since I thought Sexy Beast was fanfreakin'tastic!

Um yeah he is Ra_Z_Boy and that's why I got a big old headcheese crush on Danny! He spins me right round! That shot is from Severance I think? *sigh* Danny Dyer is the shizzy!

I always recommend In the Mouth of Madness and Session 9 to everyone who wants to hear about horror movies. I think both were very underrated and both have a reasonable breath of originality (obviously somewhat derivative, what horror movie isn't).

In the Mouth of Madness has a very Lovecraftian feel to it, and stars the great Sam Neil. He plays an insurance investigator looking for an author insured by his company that seems to have disappeared. He eventually finds the author in a town that doesn't seem to exist. Some respects of the film also have an eXistenZ type of connotation with the way they play with reality. One of my favorite horror films.

Session 9 was really unknown to me, and I believe a lot of others. I stumbled across it on Netflix one day. The film really demonstrates the kind of atmosphere, tension and suspense that can be achieved without cheesy, overt scares. Most of the horror really comes from your own imagination. I really enjoy a horror film when palpable tension can be built with a minimalist approach. There's one exceptionally scary scene that is tremendously effective without much more than a silhouette. It stars Peter Mullan and David Caruso.

lol Charlie! I am almost certain Diebitter will have something to say about this!

CompleteDegen you're right on the money with Session 9, it's one of the creepiest films ever in the abandoned sanitarium fashion. The director, Brad Anderson is wonderful! Session 9 is his earliest but he went on to helm The Machinist with Christian Bale and Transsiberian with Woody Harrelson. He also got to direct one of the Masters of Horror episodes titled Sounds Like. All are highly recommended, none are flat out horror, mostly thriller genre but he's a Master in my book. In the Mouth of Madness is early John Carpenter and I'm seconding your recommends for both films. You're dead on about at least they contain some originality in the genre, such as it is.

I thought Session 9 started out creepy but then (without trying to spoil anything) you sorta figure out where everything is going and it dies down.

what I'd say is: ahhh fakkin ate norvernahs.

Ray Winstone sounds like an Eastender to me (the real Eastenders, not the TV Show which is pretty much South London/Estuary English lol)

Oh I'm sure you'll do fine without subs - it's not as strong as say Clockwork Orange.

The lingo they use sounds completely genuine to me as 'black sahf Lundun'. If you swapped 'feds' for 'Babylon' or 'Old Bill', it could have been street lingo from 25 years ago, ya git me?

PS Here's a quick translation guide between black London and Cockney http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vvPuj4f5CKw

I need to watch Cube Zero. The original is a cool movie but HyperCub is one of the worst movies ever. They are in some weird 4th dimension and the movie makes no sense whatsoever.

They're not "in" a 4th dimension, they are in a hypercube, which is an object "with" 4 spacial dimensions. It's a theoretical construct, and I liked the premise of putting people into a 4 dimensional maze, but this movie was a pretty big mess.

The execution for this was terrible, not a good film on any front but here's the link: http://movies.netflix.com/WiMovie/Of...?trkid=2361637 If you watch don't say I didn't warn. Also, were you aware that there is another movie regarding The Girl Next Door subject matter with the indominable Ellen Page? It's called An American Crime: http://movies.netflix.com/WiMovie/An...?trkid=2361637 not an instant though. It is an easier watch than TGND but not by much and the only reason I say that is because An American Crime has some of the courtroom drama sprinkled within. You do know that this was a real case in Indianna and the girl Sylvia Likens was indeed killed in the fashion portrayed in TGND? I read a book about this crime written from the view of the victim called The Basement, authored by Kate Millett and it's the hardest real crime book I've ever read and I've read a lot.

With that out of the way, the other great Jack Ketchum adaptation to film is The Lost with Marc Senter. Here's my review of The Lost from netflix:

I haven't seen a character like this since Dennis Hopper in Blue Velvet. Ray Pye is a whacked out, high strung psycho and Marc Senter does him complete justice! Marc makes him totally unique when he could have just fallen into the everyday sociopath category. He doesn't, where did they find this guy? I really dug this movie. Highly stylized direction just really makes this whole movie pop. I haven't read the book but I'm sure going to do so now. This is a seriously twisted movie and not for the faint of heart. Everything from the music to the actors to the directing fits the frenetic feel of this movie all the way down to the use of fly sounds. It's crazy! Seriously, if you are not a fan of Lynch or Blue Velvet type characters with a dash of Bale's American Psycho thrown in then you probably won't like this. If you are, this is bad to the bone! This is good, modern american horror and these guys did us horror fans proud! *sniff* Almost brings a tear to my eye! I'm going to keep my eye on the director, Chris Sivertson. He is definitely one to watch. Thanks to Lucky McKee for taking on Jack Ketchum projects! Smart move.

Guess what? If you haven't seen it? It's on instant and I highly recommend a view! Here's the link: http://movies.netflix.com/WiMovie/Th...?trkid=2361637

btw I wasn't putting a synopsis with my review because I felt with all the links in place it would be redundant. I hope you haven't seen The Lost yet, I think you'll like it even if it is a touch long in the tooth.
So, I watched this at your recommendation. I thought the fly motif was a turn off, myself. It was like the director was wanting to have a motif in the hope that it'd make the movie more artsy, and so he picked the flies. The fly sounds didn't really seem to fit outside of the opening scene. It just seemed to me like a lame way of reminding you that the crazy dude is bad. On the whole, I liked the movie pretty well, but the motif seemed forced.
