High Tension is another good French horror movie. I'm not a fan of the twist ending, but the movie as a whole is good.

when it comes to foreign horror i prefer the recent asian stuff. there's also some good spanish language horror: tesis, the devil's backbone, (rec), the baby's room, the orphanage.

and french: high tension, frontiers, inside, brotherhood of the wolf. i have martyrs on my list, haven't seen it yet.

and of course there is the wonderful swedish movie, let the right one in.

alice sweet alice is in my queue, looks decent, i like the evil child themed movies: orphan, joshua, the bad seed, the good son, etc.

trick r treat was cool, have you seen 'behind the mask: the story of leslie vernon'? i think all horror movie fans would get a kick out of that one.

'hatchet' is fun, basically an over the top jason movie, cameos from robert englund, tony todd, and kane hodder.

i also really enjoyed 'the last horror movie'.

I saw The Perfect Host on HDnet a few weeks ago, very solid. batpooh insane Niles is a hoot!

Not really a horror movie per se but Hobo with a Shotgun should suit this thread well. A more over the top version of Machete, but much better imo. oh and Rutger Hauer

Hobo absolutely belongs in this thread. I love exploitation films and Hobo was pretty cool...and Rutger like you said. I'm excited! lol All those suggestions are most excellent films, I've seen them all. High Tension is most definitely one of my French juggernauts that I forgot to mention. I didn't mind the ending. I've seen the film so many times and the ending was forshadowed. There are clues but you have to suspend your disbelief and see the film
Spoiler:
from inside the killer's head.
At least that's the way I viewed it but whatev's it's still a majorly cool film up until that point. It's brutal, the killings are pretty amazing,

So in the useless remake thread CompleteDegen reminded me of a fillm because I was completely surprised by the actress for once. Jordan Ladd had always been meh with meh roles and nothing that ever made her stand out until she met director Paul Solet and took on the role of Grace's mother in the film Grace:

http://movies.netflix.com/WiMovie/Gr...?trkid=2361637

Here's my review minus synopsis since the netflix page is linked.

I'm going to venture to say this is one the best horror films in the genre that I've seen to date in 2009 for straight to DVD. It's an insidiously creepy and horrendously grim psychological horror. How original! That doesn't happen often in the genre. This is quality filmmaking. Director Solet makes every scene creepier than the last. Jordan Ladd is terrific and she couldn't have seemed more real. This is her best performance to date. Gabrielle Rose must be mentioned for an extremely brave performance. The script and direction pays attention to every detail. Written by the director, which I found surprising. I would've thought a woman wrote this but no. Within the scripting there is nothing that will take you out of the moment. I had goose bumps appearing all over throughout so it literally and figuratively gets under your skin. Horrifying and oppressive in its delivery. There's so much subtext in here regarding women's issues, birthing and delivery, breast-feeding and vegan vs. meat eaters, if you choose to ponder it. Even without the questions this movie dares to dangle for the viewer it is still an almost perfect horror. The camera work is so good, even the baby effects come off pretty well. There are only a few points where you will notice the trickery but it does not matter. At least they used real effects and not CGI! There aren't any truly evil characters involved. These characters are grief stricken, heart broken and their actions in this piece are emotionally driven so you will understand. It doesn't make it any easier to swallow the sadness. I'm so impressed with this director and Jordan Ladd. I never knew the girl had it in her. This is fine female driven horror but I believe our male counterparts will be just as horrified as I was with this piece so don't let that stop them from checking this out! Kudos to all involved with this wonderfully dark and tragic piece! I loved it!

Check out zombie baby vs. motherhood and nurture if you like slower paced but quite disturbing pieces.

Fright Night 2

Fright Night was recently made with David Tennant channelling Russell Brand as a vampire hunter, but this is a review of the sequel to the rather charming original.

This movie suffers from a number of problems. The main antagonist is a woman, a sister to the original’s suave Chris Sarandon vampire, but she really can’t act and doesn’t have the charisma to pull this off. Secondly, we’ve lost Charlie Brewster’s original girlfriend (who was played by the woman who became Marcy in Married With Children), who was cute, likeable and believable. The new girlfriend is, like the main vampire in this movie, not a great actress (but gets better as the film goes along), and not that likeable. Coupled with an internal logic that just doesn’t work (one vampire gets staked and just falls dead, while others immediately melt or similar), and there's poor dialogue, poor motivation and not a very good story. It’s not a patch on the original.

However, it has some merits. The practical special effects are fun, and one of the Queen Vampire’s underlings is quite good. He looks like a young James Woods with enormous and long hair. There’s also the odd shot that’s pretty memorable, such as a striking-looking black vampire skating towards the camera.

Maybe worth seeing the once for a fan of 80s horror.

3/10

Some really good recommendations in here. Loved The Perfect Host, David Hyde Pierce played that role scary and funny at the same time.

I saw The Caller last night and it wasn't bad. The girl I was watching it with said that she recognized it was Victoria from Twilight as the lead actress in it. It has an unpredictable twist and timeline/timetravel elements mixed with suspense and mystery. It grabbed us in from start to finish. The torrent is available in dvd quality. I think it just got released a month ago.

One of my favorite low budget horror movies in recent years is All The Boys Love Mandy Lane. Amber Heard plays the hot innocent Mandy Lane. It just has that campy high school horror feel of the 80's.

I'm going to have to check out The Caller, I think I'd like it. Argh! I have been totally unable to get a hold of All the Boys Love Mandy Lane. It's been in some sort of release Hell for years and I don't know why. Kind of like this Aussie film which I did get a screener for review so I got to see it but it's soooooo good that everyone should have a chance to view this puppy: The Loved Ones: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1316536/ Lola is a crazy, demented girl to be sure and the performance from Robin McLeavy is top notch here. What a wonderfully demented actress! If you can, seek this one out and see it somehow.

Haha Diebitter, Fright Night 2 is so over the top eighties looking, I kept wondering if with their vamps, they weren't going for the gold lame' Warriors Homage Weenie Award?

I watched The Midnight Meat Train with a buddy and we were joking around throughout the movie about the whole ridiculous premise, especially the last 20 minutes. But it's still good entertainment if you like gore.

It's based on a Clive Barker short story and stars Bradley Cooper and Vinnie Jones(who was perfectly cast for this role).

Vinnie Jones as Mahogany was Sick in Midnight Meat Train! He was the best that movie had to offer. I liked it a lot but I was pretty perplexed that Director Kitamura of Versus fame chose cgi blood splatter. I think it would have been so much better with a few more practical effects and less cgi. A little more gray matter wouldn't have been bad a' la Scanners either, especially with Vinnie's fabulous Hammer weapon! Yah? Just saying...Either way though I thought it was pretty entertaining and rather sad that the film got such a limited, theatrical release. Poor Clive Barker and Ryuhei Kitamura, I heard they were treated pretty badly throughout production by the studio. *sniff*

Digging the hell out of this thread. Finally got a chance to catch up on it. Good, good stuff, all.

My youngest is 12, and he's gotten into the Universal monster films, just like I did when I was his age. We had a Mummy fest this week, and I was unsure as to how he would take the first one. I mean, he loved the remake a few years ago, but it moved along pretty well. And he's not afraid of black and white films, but this is one of those films that was big on atmosphere, not action.

He dug it. I Hadn't seen it in a few years, and it was one I used to catch on regular rotation on Shock Theater, the late night monster movie show here in town. The Mummy kind of gets pushed aside in favor of the "Big 3" (Frankenstein, Dracula, Wolfman), and the character was in that "second-tier" of box set DVD releases a few years ago, with the Invisible Man and the Creature from the Black Lagoon.

The first film stands up, though. Karloff is amazing, and the scene where his eyes open is still riveting and downright creepy. It's a little slow, sure. And I would sure like to see the deleted "reincarnation" scene, but I've read the footage is gone. It's still a good flick, and deserves a good Halloween viewing.

Also, there is an episode of Supernatural that acts as a homage to the Universal films, right down to the logo. Well worth digging out.

That's a really cool box set and I will totally admit that when I saw The Mummy on tv when I was 5 it scared me more than any of the other Universal's and I had seen all of them by then. The Mummy is creepy and Karloff, I agree is amazing.

I'd like to give you a recommendation for a horror film to watch with your kid as it's really horror lite as long as the child has been exposed to some horror. Maybe a little more than just the mummy but this is a great, little, indie horror film recently released to watch with kids. Fido (2006) with Billy Connelly: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0457572/
It's such a clever film with a lot of social commentary disguised in a really fun film with heart. Gorgeous looking production values, btw. You'd never know it had a smaller budget. Billy Connelly is amazing in here. Anyone else seen this and recommend to watch with your little, budding horror fiends?

HC, it is a great film, and I'm proud to say he picked it out himself at the Movie Stop two weeks ago. He had heard my wife and I talk about it (Billy Connelly is a bit of a deity at our house), and he loves zombie movies (I know, I know...he's too young, and I'm a bad father...sue me). He has watched it about, oh, a million times since then.
Spoiler:
I was actually planning on picking it as my "zombie" film in Dom's draft. Don't tell anyone

He bought it, along with The Monster Squad, which he saw some of on TV, and kind of got him interested in the first place. It's a little more juvenile, and a little silly, but a great "starter" film. It features the standard Universal crew, and their battle against a gang of pre-teen monster movies fans.

Kind of a Fischer-Price "My First Creature Feature".

Don't worry, though...I've picked a few of your other recommendations to catch before too long.

This movie was a major disappointment. I don't think she even killed a single person all film. If she did kill it was at most 1 person. When you watch splice you aren't expecting an academy award film, or intelligent movie, you are watching what you believe to be a horror film, and expecting her to escape and go on a killing spree but that doesn't happen. She is locked up in a barn the entire movie and does nothing.
This movie reminded me of Species, except Species is much better for entertainment.
