Thought id watch a horror with the girlfriend tonight. Think weve settled on Sinister, is it any good? I never watch that many horror movies, but i do like a few. It seemed like a genuinly scary movie, but with good acting. It kinda had an asian vibe to it, which is good because i think asian horrormovies are much scarier. Any other recent good scary movies?

Although i do not watch alot of horror movies, i have seen alot of the classics, including nosferatu. Im however not interested in watching an old classic now, so if anybody has a tip for a recent movie that would be great.

Zombie Flesh Eaters aka Zombi 2 (1979)

63/100

From what I've read of it, this one seems somewhat overrated, but it does have its moments. Apparently marketed as some sort of sequel to Dawn of the Dead in some places, these zombies aren't quite the same as those of Romero's universe. They're even slower if anything, and more listless, and their facial and bodily features are not as 'naturalistic' as Romero's walking dead (it's all relative, of course). In this one, the animation of the dead goes back to older zombie lore, back to voodoo and cursed histories. Even so, it's not really explained, and we are just left to it.

Most of the action is set on a Caribbean island Mantoul, and here we have some too-ing and fro-ing where some doctor at the end of his limits is trying to figure out what's going on, whilst failing to take any sort of precautions against frequent cases of the reanimated dead. Throw in two couples investigating the disappearance of one of the girls' father but being stranded by a damaged boat, and you have the main protagonists.

They are a tired lot, and the film is a little boring in places. The best acting by far comes from some brief work by the doctor's wife (she ends up with her head skewered on a wooden splinter and gets out early), and there's a decent enough score. The constant use of drumming when you go to island scenes is a little too close to Chinese water torture for my liking.

Having said all that, there are a number of pretty good scenes throughout - a "deserted" yacht floating into New York harbour; a definite "the one where..." moment when a zombie fights a shark that is quite amazing (how did they do that?); an eye on a stick moment; and a graveyard of ancient corpses rising; final shots where we see the world has gone down the tubes.

Overrated I think, and not in the same league as any in the original Romero trilogy, but definitely worth a watch if you aren't too averse to unrelenting gore and zombie chomping down on the ever decreasing band of goodies.

Im no big fan of scary movies but insideious was insane.
Two things I am deathly afraid of in my life are trying to wake my kids and they not wake up, and hearing odd voices on the baby monitor I use for my youngest.... Had me shook

I found a couple of low budgetish horror movies on Youtube (i.e. free) that may be worth checking out if you like the genre (I've included the clicky links). To be clear, these movies aren't GOAT/Citizen Kane type of stuff but were pretty entertaining nonetheless.

THE SHRINE: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A9JbZVYKySo

About a reporter who investigates the disappearance of an American student last seen in a small town in Poland. I liked this one mostly because it kept me guessing about what was really going on. I don't really want to say anything else due to potential spoilers. There is also a pretty horrific death scene involving a mask.

THE TUNNEL: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wVQrozMTWlY

Set in Australia, about a reporter who investigates a closed off section of a city subway system that the government is trying to keep people out of for unknown reasons. This movie is done in mockumentary style a la THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT so don't watch if you hate that kind of thing. I liked this one because stuff about exploring old places I find interesting and the slow burn buildup of the reporter and her crew realizing they're not alone in the tunnel.

Can anyone recommend a good horror movie that streams on Netflix?

I loved the first half, but after they moved the whole thing turned into a cheeseball pos, imo.

Nice writeup on zombi2. I agree that it's not great, but the shark vs. zombie scene is just so awesome.

I try a lot of these and rarely make it 10 minutes in. I'll do some digging later but off the top of my head The Innkeepers was the only unknown (to me) horror I enjoyed. I was very dissapointed that nothing jumped out at me from their new halloween section.

I really enjoyed Cabin In The Woods 2 beauties and dozens of cool monsters. The last 20 minutes or so was so over the top that I missed a lot from laughing so hard.

Last night I watched Best Worst Movie a documentary about the horrible Troll 2 and the cult following it has today. worth a watch.

I've heard V/H/S/2 is available on Netflix Instant Watch (USA). It's a found-footage anthology flick and it's ****ing awesome. I highly recommend it. One short in particular is badass and deserves to be a full length feature.
I've heard good things. I loved the first one, so I'll def be checking it out.

Idk man, it caught me completely off guard and I was genuinely creeped out. Astral projection was covered in Poltergeist?

I enjoyed The Cabin in the Woods, but it's really more of a comedy than a horror movie.

I wanna Netflix a horror film for Halloween, but there's like nothing good afaict. Any suggestions? I've seen VHS (didn't really care for it).

I thought much of the beginning/middle of Insidious was very effective. I felt it kind of came off the rails in the final act, though.

In no particular order and some are on Netflix:

Mother's Day (original, remake is rubbish)
Insidious
Dead Snow (really entertaining)
Tucker & Dale vs Evil (comedy horror but funny)
I saw the devil (horror / thriller 5 ******)
Prince Of Darkness (really freaks me out for some reason)
Exorcist 3
Let the right one in

This was my feeling as well, especially with the demon and old woman in the chair.

I agree, it felt like a superior reworking of Poltergiest, right up until Darth Maul appears. I thought the old lady was effective though.

My recommend for Halloween is the very effective, skeevy remake of Maniac with Frodo Baggins.

Now on Netflix US

Was looking for horror movies to watch and found this list:

http://www.tasteofcinema.com/2013/20...e-last-decade/

Seen most of them, but hadn't seen:

The Host

Julia's Eyes

One Missed Call

Dead End

Watching "The Host" now. Pretty good so far. One Missed Call has a 3.7 on imdb so I probably won't watch that unless someone convinces me otherwise

Will give that a go tonight when I'm back from work. Sounds like something I would enjoy. Will report back with my thoughts.

It's certainly not a new movie, but I finally got to THE SHINING on the big screen. Yes I've seen it many times before but I wanted to experience the GOATish cinematography and eerie musical score in a theater w/decent sound. And it was certainly a worthwhile experience.

The Cinemark Theater group are the ones screening THE SHINING again today and there are some late shows tonight if you want to check it out.

I enjoyed that. Thanks for the recommendation.

Also thought Frodo was very good playing the creep in that film.

Definitely do not watch One Missed Call. Let us know how Julia's Eyes is though. It's one of the more recent horrors that actually has a decent rating that I haven't seen yet.

I like how it was so damn committed to first person, and it worked really well. Also the music was really well chosen and integrated, and overall a really effective, creepy piece of cinema.
