Object of HATE: Marina Abramović

I occasionally help out at a performance space in Santa Monica, and I’ve dealt with hundreds of performance artists from just about every style of “art” and “performance” imaginable. I’ve done shows with performers that blew me away, and some that are doing what I don’t even fathom how it could be considered art. I’ve also done shows where I have no idea what the hell is going on, but I get that they’re trying to do something. But in all my years of doing technical directing work with them, there has at least always been a human being behind whatever ******ed **** they might be doing. I’ve gotten along with pretty much every single one of them, even if I hated their work.

Like Louis C.K., I hate for recreation. Its fun and its relatively harmless. But my hatred for overly-pretentious artists is different. And its also fresh. A show at my space did this last weekend had a couple of those “Why the **** is this art? And why the **** am I helping you with it?” and 1 in particular just straight up pissed me off. Which made me think of the poster child for this kind of “art” and “performance”, Marina Abramović, and why I hate her.

There is just no damn human being in there. Now, I know we’re not supposed to see the “non-artist” side of her. Thats not necessarily for anyone else to see. But she’s quite adamant about her dedication to her “art” in that she is never anyone but an artist… Therefore, I hate both of her selves. I’ve been familiar with her for years, and we share a few acquaintances and they confirmed that she’s pretty much like that 24/7. The hatred started with a quote a friend quoted that went something like “I wasn’t like other kids. While they were playing on the playground, I was drawing my day dreams within the clouds” and I wanted to vomit.

This isn’t about ego. Hell, I’m a huge hip-hop fan, and thats ALL about ego. I would possible even be a fan of hers if she was egotistical. But I feel like if I ever asked her any question, no matter how mundane, I’d want to her to ***** with every single answer. Doug Stanhope once said “If you call yourself an artist and not just say what the **** you do, you probably need a day job.” And Frank Zappa once said “The most important thing is art is the frame”. Almost every quote I’ve read of hers about art is something that belongs on a Ansel Adams background to be used as inspiration for struggling artists who should’ve probably went and got that goddamn day job. And somehow she got rich and famous doing this bull****!! Get the **** outta here!!!!

Kardashian This multi-headed beast epitomizes everything wrong with the world.

Other than the occasional smile, the Kardashian is devoid of anything resembling a personality. Not particularly pretty and lacking talent, or for that matter, intelligence, their rise to fame and wealth can only be explained one way. Actually, it can't be explained.

Seriously....

And, what's the deal with the giant one?

I hate everything they stand for. I hate each and every one of them.

Just look what they do to anyone that gets close to them.

They made Kanye perpetually angry. OK, yeah, he was already angry, but still.

They turned Lamar Odom into a coke addict. OK, well, maybe he was already one. But still.

But, this. This is really what pisses me off. He was a hero. A man's man. The epitome of mandom. I can't bear to post what happened to him. I hate them for what they did to him.

DC11GTR;

I love the LA art scene as long as there is a demarcation at LACMA. The street art scene in downtown is raw, real, and non-pretentious. Not sure wtf is going on near the ocean.

Dominic, can you clarify what you mean by the Celebrity category when you say not TV / Film / Music? I feel like there really isn't any such person, since celeb basically means you have to have been on some sort of recorded medium at some point (assuming the celebrity was born in the past 150 years).

They are not famous for being an actor, filmmaker, or musician. You know - talent. Anything else goes.

ROUND 1:

Category - Celebrity

Spoiler:
Tomi Lahren

Spoiler:

Tomi Lahren is the poster child for what's wrong with America. An educated, obviously smart person who purposely lies and disseminates half truths in order to garner "clicks" and "likes." She is the epitome of the FOX NEWS generation of conservatives, whose only real purpose is to play "gotcha" with Liberals, no matter the consequences of that "win."

She spouts propaganda without regard for the truth, and now that she has been hired by the Evil Empire of news organizations, Lahren's audience will grow exponentially. She is now the female Sean Hannity. Let's not even mention that her fame is not because she spouts a particularly unique or interesting viewpoint, it's simply because she is young, blonde, and kinda pretty.

I hate her with the force of a thousand suns.

ROUND 2:

Category - Food/Beverage

Spoiler:
Sriracha

Spoiler:

What in all that is holy is making this bland, boring "hot sauce" so damn popular? Hot sauce is supposed to spice up your food a little. It enhances the natural flavors of a food. It's NOT supposed to overwhelm that food with it's own taste and heavy sauce. If Sriracha was a person, it'd be Dr. Phil. That's how bland and boring this hot sauce is.

Sriracha is not even particularly "hot" or spicy. But it's everywhere! I've even seen sriracha ice cream. I kid you not. That old standard, Tabasco, is heads and shoulders above it as a hot sauce, and if you can't beat Tabasco, what are you even doing?

I even hate the stupid squeeze bottle it comes in that makes a fart PFFFFFTHHH sound when you squeeze it. Classy, Guys.

I also think it's a hipster thing these days, and I can stand hipsters. They're going to their "sushi burrito" places where they put this unhold, godawful mess of a sauce on their stupid food. You want a burrito? Get a burito. You want sushi? Get some sushi. And if you want a ****ing hot sauce, get something with balls that will peel off the roof of your mouth if you use too much of it. Not this crap that you can feed to babies.

Hating on sriracha is strong.

Do we have to pick a different category each round?

A celebrity that is not an actor, filmmaker, or musician. That's what I was going for. But I don't care who you choose. I was just trying not to get too many "arts" picks.

Interpret it any way you want.

It kinda sucks because we don't have a category for actor or filmmaker while musician falls into the musician/musical group category.

There is no musician/musical group category. It was changed to Inanimate Object.

But you have movies, songs, and TV shows...I didn't want this just to be about people hate. You're welcome to turn any category into your object of hate, if your hatred is strong enough.

TV Show

The premise is to take a bunch of misfits and create a situation where the only way to succeed is to stomp on the souls of everyone else. Backstabbing, deceit and betrayal is the name of the game.

But it isn't the show itself that I hate as much as the wheels of bad shows it put into motion.

Big Brother, The Bachelor, the Bachelorette, The Amazing Race, The Mole, Top Model.... and the list goes on. Shows with no redeeming qualities full of contestants with no redeeming qualities.

And, ultimately it created this. And there you have it.

Love the Sriracha pick. That one was way under my radar of things I thought would be picked.

I thought the point of hipsterism was to enjoy trashy things and overpay for it, to induce some sort of cultural irony. Sriracha certainly fits the symbolism of that person, IMO.

Agreed about the horrible flavor of that stuff. It tastes like rotten cauliflower* and has a similar heat index.

*never had rotten cauliflower, of course, but that's what I'd imagine it to be.

Object of HATE: Dexter

This one is ostensibly an easy pick. It was an okay show with a single great (though in retrospect, it was only pretty good) season, then dove off a cliff in a way I've never seen before.

To hate it is kind of standard at this point, but it goes deeper then that. It created "hate-watch" for me. It started the concept of "plot-commited" for me. It even made me hate Showtime as a whole.

Looking back, I can't think of a single redeeming aspect of it. I can't figure out why I ever started watching it to begin with.* I didn't even start watching when it first aired, I jumped on bored (misspelling intended) in between season 2 and 3. Its just not good. At all.

But it also made me decide that if a show starts to lose me, its dead to me, never to return.

*actually, a girl I was into loved it and I started watching it for her. And it didn't work out, so that makes this show even worse.....

I recall coming into the Lounge and laying waste on Dexter. All the horrendous plot-holes, overly stupid police, lame dialogue, and so on. No one sided with me, saying "you can't expect Hemingway."

Well, no, I don't expect Hemingway... but since the vast majority of Hollywood writers are ivy league lit majors, I do expect some notion of consistent and semi-believable story telling. A 6th grader is expected to do this between math and history homework, for absolutely no pay.
