Round 2, pick 33 overall

Well, I knew there was going to be some WTF in this draft, but this here is some pretty big WTF. Now, we can argue about who the "best" rock band of all time is, but there is little argument over which is the "biggest" and "most influential." And not a single one of their songs have been drafted in nearly two full rounds. I would have bet pretty heavily against me having the pick of their litter at the end of round 2, but here I am. This band has around a dozen different songs that could all go in the first round, and 3 or 4 dozen that could or should be drafted in this draft of 170 songs, more than, dare I say, any other artist or band that will have a song they did drafted.

And Lou Reed had 2 first round selections.

Gentlemen, I draft for value. I draft what was one of the last collaborative efforts between the two men who are arguably the #1 and #2 all time rock composers. While I would like to pair this with an undrafted 1:19 track that functions as an introduction to this one, that is against them darned rules. Fortunately, this rock epic for rock band and orchestra can stand alone. I draft The Beatles - A Day in the Life

Great artist. Great song.
Yeah this is one of his many great songs. I'm pretty sure which Young song I will select but its hard to keep it to only one.

Great pick! Definitely on my short list for which Beatles song I was considering for the draft. The lack of Beatles picked so far doesn't surprise me even though the Beatles are best ever and they have more "draftable" songs imho than anyone else. And many of those songs are certainly better than some of the picks so far. I think people will try to show variety (I know I will) which will make the Beatles suffer in his draft. They pretty much dominated the album draft and the greatest bands poll but when only considering "songs" it is easier to go off of the reservation.

Round 2 pick- Deep Purple "Smoke on the Water"

The most infamous guitar riff in rock.

Round 3 pick- Pink Floyd "Wish You Were Here"

My favorite song off my favorite Floyd Album which was largely made in remembrance of former band member Syd Barrett. Beautiful song.

Infamous riff, indeed. WYWH is a great pick, though.

I'll tell you why I probably won't pick The Beetles in this draft.

For me to consider a song a "best ever," there are two rubrics that I use: depth and re-play.

Re-play is perhaps the most important. Yeah, I'll gladly listen a Beetles album once and I'll listen to any Beetles song once, but there has never once been a song I heard of theirs where I pressed "rewind-play" that I can recall.

Depth is also important to me. After scraping away the lyrics, there is nothing more to it. After learning the chords, there is nothing to search for. Yeah, you can pick it, play it, or do whatever with it, but at the end of the day, all of their songs are incredibly shallow: what you see (hear) is what you get.

Now, don't get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with the Beetles, and I do enjoy their music. I enjoy what they have to offer and I'll jam up the Beetles with anyone who asks me to, but while "fun" is a great rubric to use, I just don't think it fairs well against fun + depth + re-play value.

If it makes anyone feel better, I can't bear to listen to Wish You Were Here these days. Just way over-played and it irritates me that, along with that song and *undrafted* specifically, everyone is like "You don't know how to play that?" No, I don't. What am I, a radio?

"A Day in the Life" was going to be my Beatles' pick (if only for the last note - of course, now, I'll have to go to the another extreme).....I wish I could be so lyrical about my ordinary everyday activity: "computer on, log in, check for mail, in my mail bin...found my way online, to look at some cats, drank my labatt's and I went into a dream...."

If I pick a Beatles song, it will be an early pop song.

ATTENTION:

To make this draft deeper with more picks - but without making more rounds and extending this to intolerable lengths - I am declaring that starting in ROUND 5 you will be require to pick TWO songs, not just one! So everyone gets two picks and we get more songs to choose.

so that means that at the end of round 4 and the beginning of round 5, Rakeme will be choosing THREE straight songs one in the fourth and two in the 5th. And then at the end of the fifth and beginning of the sixth, GBP04 will be choosing FOUR straight songs. And so on.

Round 3, Pick #36 overall

There were a couple other directions I could go here, but I think the best move is to once again go for value and pick the elephant in the room. Obviously I was being a bit hyperbolic earlier when I joked that Page refused to play this song anymore, but I don't think Page realized exactly what he'd done when he penned this bad boy. It's gotten a ton of love/hype for being one of the greatest rock songs of all time, and it's pretty severely overplayed. That said, there's a damn good reason for that.

Led Zeppelin - Stairway to Heaven

ROUND THREE PICK

Jumpin' Jack Flash - The Rolling Stones

The song with a hook so good, Keith used it twice!

To me, this is the quintessential Stones song. Every time that opening riff begins, how can you not get up out of your chair and dance some? Do the Mick-chicken-wing flap and strut, you know?

Keith has said the hook is really just the same one from UNDRAFTED but played sorta backwards. Gotta love a guy who steals from himself.

Don't have much to say other than this is the best party song ever recorded. It will get any lame-ass party off the ground. Guaranteed.

Heart of Gold - Neil Young
