Even though I think this would still be available in Round 10, I'm going with Dom's view - eschewing value for pure enjoyment.
Maybe it's the adventure-wannabe in me ("Lawrence of Arabia" is my favorite film), but this is my favorite song:

Pirates - Emerson, Lake & Palmer

Jump to 41:45 for the beginning of the song, 45:19 for the beginning of the lyrics and 55:02 is the end.

Another epic masterpiece! This is off of their Works, Volume 1 (1977). Everyone got a side and side 4 was all together featuring this and undrafted. Even though other more popular songs got me into ELP, this is one that kept me there. In 1976, Emerson was approached to write the score for Norman Jewison for "The Dogs of War". The score never ended up happening, but the work ended up going into this song. Greg Lake and Pete Sinfield spent the most time they ever had on a song -researching the history of pirates in order to get the lyrics right. There's a richness and grandeur to this saga, that even though some have called it self-indulgent and pretentious, I enjoy the hell out of.

I did kind of warn you....John Cage may not be far behind.....

"You like the Red Skelton painting, buy the Red Skelton painting alright. You like Home Improvement, tape it and go over it like the Zapruder film. It's your living room, it's your life, go nuts. Enjoy the world on your terms, follow your own heart and take what critics say with a fifty pound bag of salt because at best a critic is just another human being, like yourself, fumbling around in the dark trying to separate the artistic wheat from the wonderbread." - Dennis Miller

Def. surprising, but the dude does got some talent. Wouldn't surprise me to see a few of his others get voted.

This. I mean, that is probably their most "accessible" song, but not their best. I still like it though.

Oh, man. I was totally thinking of taking this one next. Such a great pick. For me, this is one of the few songs that are utterly timeless, the originals and the covers are all excellent, and it is just a damn fun song to play on a guitar.

Nice pick.

I hate the White Stripes, but I get their significance for the time frame. I think most of their success can be written off by the timing of their popularity, but that really couldn't have happened without quite a few bands that were popular at that time.

Check yourself before you wreck yourself breaux.

"Dictators bassist Andy Shernoff states that Page's sped up, downstroke guitar riff in "Communication Breakdown" was an inspiration for The Ramones guitarist Johnny Ramone's downstroke guitar style.[3] Ramone stated in the documentary "Ramones: The True Story", he improved at his down-stroke picking style by playing the song over and over again for the bulk of his early career."

Ramones as a band wouldn't exist if not for Jimmy Page's left nut.

I just love Dire Straits. Mark Knopfler is such an amazing guitarist. Grant it, he isn't a fast player by any stretch, but that music is so full of dynamic and emotion. It doesn't surprise me to see them picked so early. Nice pick.

For the sake of expedience, I'm going to pick and do a write-up when I get home. And If someone could pm NYC, and adjust the spreadsheet, I would appreciate it. For my second pick, I'm choosing the song that started it for me, "Hound Dog", by a southern gentleman named Elvis Presley.

Check yourself. You might note that what you quoted referred to "What's Going On." Or am I going to hear a disquisition on Page's influence on Marvin Gaye?
