Of course. You will be added to the spreadsheet. You go after Hikeeba.

I had both Communication Breakdown and Gimme Shelter very high up on my list. Both are my favorite songs from those respective artists.

So Hikeeba is on the clock, correct?

Assuming Mschu sent the PM dutifully, Hikeeba has a little over an hour.

Sorry to be late with my first round pick. Tournys in Tunica yesterday and today. Will post more later. Anyway here is first round pick.

With my first pick, I select Baba o'Riley from The Who

http://youtu.be/Dk_gYtoRH4I

I just dare you not to get fired up listening to Baba o'Riley. From the slow build to the final frenzy, it's one of the Who's signature songs. While not necessarily my most favorite Who song, it was going to go quick.

And Hikeeba is here with his first pick: Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen (which is actually my second pick, but I do not trust John, who is on the clock).

Write up to be posted in this very space right here!

Damn, that version is...whew...just...damn.

This was one of the "undrafted" songs I was referring to in the "Gimme Shelter" write-up, and this version in particular. Wagner and Hunter were so good, Alice Cooper snapped 'em up.

Ah nice. Looks like I'm just in time. Is John around or should I just go ahead?

Of course all of you who know me well will just know what I'm going to select.

What I particularly like about this band is the avoidance of useless chatter between songs. Just a simple, 1,2,3, and they're off and on to the next one. By the way, NPR had this listed as one of the 100 influential pieces of American music, part of a list that included Rhapsody in Blue.

GP, you can go after John Cole makes his pick - which he has! So you're up. Pick TWO songs.

JC, while I'm not surprised you picked a Ramones' song, I am surprised you picked that one.

nice picks so far!

with my two snap first rounders already gone (Sympathy for the Devil and Heroin), I'm turning to another top fiver for me (though actually not my favorite of his). it's received a billion accolades, but one of the coolest things about it was that it's one of the first rock songs that broke the 3-minute mold and got to stretch its legs. I'm not a rock historian but when you listen to the song, and see that it came out in 1965(!) its influence is intuitively clear.

also, I don't think I've ever heard a song that meshes so much musical activity in such a perfect way.

sorry, hard to find a version but this one works.

Well....maybe not exactly that space, but this space here:

I could fill out my greatest songs with just Queen songs. But of all them, this one stands out as the most unique. This is one of the first songs I remember listening over and over again on 45 (if you lift up that drop arm thingy the needle just goes back to the beginning!! - heck, sometimes I even turned it over and listened to undrafted (rhyming "forget her" with "carburetor"...very clever))

Call it rock-opera or mock-opera, whatever - but having a 6-minute song with such an internal variety not only get airplay, but hit #1 twice (in the UK), as well as chart across the world, is a testament to its ability to connect with people. (In spite of Wayne's World.) Also, since Mercury kept the real interpretation to himself, all you interpretationalists can have a field day dissecting it.

It's also a great vocabulary and history builder - silhouette, Galileo, Bismillah, Scaramouche, fandango, etc. (I can't remember if I learned "figaro" from this or "What's Opera, Doc?"...I'd also like to mention, that as a wild youth, I played this at a piano recital.)

My only problem is that this couldn't be performed live (unless you cloned 4 more Freddies.) But, hey, maybe it's a song like this, where 24-tracks of tape are just not enough, that pushed engineers along.....

Often imitated - never duplicated, Bohemian Rhapsody is my #1 pick.

next pick isn't as iconic but it's my second favorite live concert clip (first is this version of Heroin, from 1974. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AMsGvYzedjA. A must watch. pairs unbelievably with some red wine and a spliff).
and I'm sort-of optimistic my other favorites will be available when I'm up next.

This is from a band that I think is wildly underrated. The vocals are perfectly sung, evoking emotion throughout. The guitar solo at the end is one of the best in rock. And it's just ****ing cool.

Spoiler:
Dire Straits - Brothers in Arms

Oooh, nice Dire Straits pull. I love that song.

Guys, make sure you are PMing the next guy up and updating the spreadsheet!

I've always loved the beginning of this song, a few voices at a party. Okay, you all know what it is now. But this one is certainly a song that tried to make a difference, and not just that, unlike some "protest" songs, it actually works and still works today.
