My first pick.

I'm going to go with the songs I just love the most for my list. "Value" be damned!

Spoiler:
American Girl, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, 1977

Spoiler:

From the Heartbreakers' debut album. I think of this song as the quintessential 70's rock & roll song. It's got that classic Petty story-telling, an incredible Mike Campbell guitar lick that is obviously ripped off from the Byrds, and just a driving, Stan Lynch backbeat that gets you going.

One of the all-time great songs to blast while racing down the road in a convertible. Every time this song comes on the radio, I literally jump up and down in excitement. It could very well be my favorite rock song.

I had already PMed him in the interest of moving things along. He's got another 50 min or so.

I like American Girl, but I'm not sure it's in my top 5 favorite Petty songs.

Trying to compile a list was next to impossible. I mean, I'd have a hard time doing a top ten Petty songs list, much less THIS freakin' list. So I'm just gonna wing it.

Wook, I'm playing a lot of poker this weekend - tournaments - so if I'm not around, feel free to move things along.

Therefore a 4 minute and a 3 minute song is not rock.

The rules don't say the song has to be R&R, but that the song has to be written during the R&R Era, so...

This would've been a nominee for my top ten list.

Sirius has had a Petty channel the past month, awesome. American Girl not in my Petty top 5, but very solid nonetheless.

I think Whipping Post is an excellent choice, definitely have a lot of Allman on my board.

Unfortunately I had a college roommate whose gf strung him along for an entire summer apart, to break up with him upon her return (she was with another dude all summer). He had Whipping Post on repeat for like 2 months.

I'm about to start my write-up for #4. I have no idea what to pick and the first two songs kinda threw me off. So I'm just going to make a pick already. Write-up/post should be itt within 20 minutes or so.

Got a pm that I am likely up since nobody is picking so I'll go ahead since I am going to bed soon. Lots of terrific songs to choose from. I'm gonna take a true legendary song that had a big impact and helped change the direction of music in the late 60's

Round One
Purple Haze (1967)
- Jimi Hendrix

This song makes you listen to it. It certainly wasn't the typical "pop" song of the mid 60's. It was many peoples first taste of Hendrix and his amazing talent. There were lots of ways to go with this first pick and lots of strong contenders. I'm happy with this as a start for my draft and I have a very long list that are all in my opinion can't miss but the first few rounds I will stick with obvious favorites before I get too obscure.
