Yup they are razors. Geoduck is native for "dig deep". I might try to get one this year, next good clamming tides are end of April.

Lincoln city tourney? Good luck!

Hit Lincoln city tournament. Bunch of one three no limit games and one two five nl. Some pots around 800 or so. But seems to be only the better players from elsewhere there.

Caught a pretty good little bass today, between 7 and 8 pounds I figure. I just made a picture and turned it back

Nice bass!

I made bait today, filled five five gallon buckets with herring. Curing tonight, vacuum seal and freeze tomorrow. I think I have about 350-400 of them.

Went out and did a little ice fishing this morning. Went with my brother and step-dad to chase the big boys (Lake Trout) through the ice. We've caught a ton of decent pike, but never lakers before.

No luck for us, but did have two on. One monster that we got to the hole, but lost trying to bring it through. Probably should have wore it out more first.

Overall a great morning on the lake though, sun was shining, not too much wind. Can't beat that I guess.

I vastly underestimated. I just put them in the cure solution, lost count at 900 or 950 with easily 250 remaining. At $1 a piece in the bait shop, this was quite the money saving excursion. I'll post up some pics when I vacuum seal them.

did you get your 25 pounds with a cast net or jig for them. i suspect you went out in the kelp beds with kayak or did you get them in a bay somewhere.
ya know they are great eating if you smoke them up.

Crescent City CA, basically anywhere in the harbor. The seals and sea lions corral them into tight places and people stand rather close to one another throwing nets and dropping sabikis. There is no limit on pacific herring in California.

I can't find my vacuum sealer right now, it isn't where it is supposed to be, and I'm wondering which of my siblings borrowed it without telling me. The bags are gone too. Not a good way to start the day. Ugh.

Not completely. It is functional and the crabbers are using it as I type this. There is a lot of construction going on right now and there are temporary docks in place. It seems that it will be a constant rebuild and repair job. The Chilean quake did some damage, and the Japanese quake really wrecked it. The harbor is a tsunami magnet.

i remember back in 1964 when alaska had the big quake. people died going to the docks to watch it come in. and even when the sheriff got a dispatch that the tsunami was coming in at a certain time zulu( Greenwich) he had no idea what was going on.

Brightened with bluing, scented with anise oil. I have 4x this amount in the freezer and am set for bait for the year for me, my dad and guests. Salmon opens April 6 south of the 40°10' line, can't wait.

We haven't had much rain south of about Port Orford or Florence even. You guys have been getting soaked, and the Rogue, Chetco, Smith, Klamath are all low and clear.

Awesome! There is still ice on the lakes here.

When my Father In Law passed away last year we inherited his fishing boat. It is nothing fancy but a decent 18.5 ft fishing boat with a 70HP Marc, livewells and storage. I really really hope to get it out quite a bit this year and put some time in on the water.

I went out to the jetties for some poke poling yesterday. The annual mussel quarantine ran really late this year and was only lifted within the last couple weeks. I gave up on the poke poll when I came across a bed of fist size mussels.

So delicious, and there are lots more. I'm gonna be in the mussels for as long as I want I think. Clam tides return next week. Spring turkey is opening next weekend. Abalone opens a week from tomorrow and salmon in two weeks down south of the 40°10' line so a road trip is in order.

Those things are enormous. I don't think I've ever seen mussels that big. Is that normal?
The Great Outdoors - Hunting/Fishing/Trapping/Camping ect..... Quote
03-24-2013 , 07:24 PM
For California mussels, yeah that isn't too much bigger normal. I've seen slightly bigger, about 8" long, but these were a nice find.

There is a more common species of native bay mussel that is much smaller and more like what you see in the supermarkets.

Poke polin. Are you going for those pricklebacks those things they call eels down there. Where u stick your bait in the rocks. Do you ever get to pull a big ling out.
The Great Outdoors - Hunting/Fishing/Trapping/Camping ect..... Quote

Yup, MFE, monkey faced eel, pricklebacks, whatever you want to call them. My buddy pulled a 29" MFE last week, biggest one I've ever seen. They make great ceviche.

I've pulled lings that way too but usually underlings and not what I'm after.

I cooked 20 pounds of these babies Wednesday my aunt brought me right off the boat. I know I didn't catch them myself but its too good of a pic to pass up showing what my low boil produced.

Nothing beats fresh seafood. Today I hit up seaside oregon. For razor clams. Had a decent minus tide so off I went. First half hour or so no real shows and most people were stomping trying to get the clams to show a hole by moving their long tube which they stick up out of the sand to filter out plankton and such.
So I stuck with a little higher on the beach and looked for small show holes that others missed or pop up from the activity. Soon I had a dozen four to five inch clams. That made for a great dinner.
