Personal best bass for me yesterday. Somewhere around the 6lb mark. We've had a lot of rain, and the water was way up. Pitched a craw into the flooded brush and thought I was snagged until I felt the head shake.

super duper bass. anything over 4 pounds is worthy as a trophy.

That's a beauty! On a live crayfish?

I've had 3-pounders tear up ultra-light spinning gear. That one's got to be a thrill!

Thanks yall!

Not a live craw, a Netbait paca slim texas rigged with a 3/0 hook and 3/8ths oz tungsten bullet weight. It's my go to for fishing this lake.

Got a hunting question for folks who may know. Was having a conversation about deer hunting (I've never hunted), and the guy told me that when you shoot a deer you should not chase it if it bolts.

He said chasing it raises adrenaline, which keeps it alive, running and suffering longer. He said a deer can take up to an hour to bleed out.

Is that right?

I recently bought a large archery bag target and it has some vitals printed on the front--they look very small at 30 yards and beyond.

He is correct in that if the deer takes off definitely do not chase.
If it's not a good shot it can take it much longer than an hour to die. I've had to let one sit overnight more than once.

So, assuming I make a good shot and hit it in the heart or some other vital organ, the deer will take an hour to die? This really surprises me.

Heart shot or double lung is what your looking for. Do that and it be over in just a couple minutes.

generally after you hit it you wait about 20 minutes. this way the deer doesnt run far and beds down and is easy to track and find it.

yes chasing an animal hit or not makes for less better tasting meat.

the inside of a dead animals body cavity is very warm and that spoils the meat. so it is important to get to the animal soon after it is dead. the bigger the animal the worse it is.

For those that don't know, these guys are an invasive species here. They pay people to harvest them. Never heard of anyone catching one on rod and reel until, well, I did it.

I saw a show where they ate those things and they are apparently delicious but a pain to clean. I want to say bizarre eats.

never seen one. i think they are a scorpion fish relative. if so the spines are poison if they get you. wont kill you but you wont be happy about it. it would never make it aboard my boat.

My elk rifle hunting season opener was today. Game damage hunt. Unfortunately it rained like mad last night so we didn't want to tear up the ranchers road and they were not down in the hay field this morning. We will go back tonight to see if they come down early.

Finished my 4 day window to hunt elk today via the special hunt. Had a good opportunity to get one Mon but the wind swirled and blew them out before I pulled the trigger. Then this morning I missed a shot I should have made. Ranged her further than she really was and overshot. After making sure I missed saw another group a ways off and took off after them but just got a nice long walk in. Did see a dandy group of whitetail bucks. But they were off limits for this hunt. Guess I have to wait for the regular season to have another opportunity.

Realistically still 30 or more days from the start of my season because: work, but excited for when that happens. Chasing a whitetail buck and mule doe this year. Hunting partner has a moose tag so I'm sure that will be an adventure.

The last time we had a moose in our group, a Moose and Magnums party followed. We demolished a bottle of 1996 De Venoge Louis XV with deer tartare, moose tenderloin sous vided then smoked and served with béarnaise, along with many other things and it was incredible.

A magnum of 1996 Henriot Champagne Brut Millésimé waits for this season. I hope we can pop it.

Photo from my first season a few years ago. Things are already much snowier in these parts. Eep.

I've started waterfowl hunting, but with a twist. Rather than the conventional decoys and calls, I'm float hunting in a canoe. Pretty fun to bust up a flock of birds and blast them.

There's a 2 mile stretch of river that this is legal on, exactly 2 miles down river from my property. Makes for a fun quick trip.

when i used to duck hunt i floated rivers much of the time ..lots of fun even if you dont flush any.
i suggest a flat bottom boat as in cold water flipping a canoe can easily mean curtains for you.

Yeah, I'm using my Sawyer Special right now. Built in 1980 and designed for a guy that wanted a canoe to haul big game out of the brush. Stability isn't a problem. I also race canoes, so cold water swims happen to me a couple times a year. Dry bag, change of clothes, etc almost always on board when I winter paddle.

Tons of fun. My kids love paddling and being on the water. Blasting ducks is a nice addition to what we already do.

Very few people float hunt them here. It's almost all conventional style duck hunting. I got the idea to try it after paddling in the race boat past tons of them. It's worked really well so far.
