try subsurface for those nice redsides in the river. or even a bigger hopper type fly.
check the regs. as they have some strange closures around in oregon sometimes.

Nada today. Quite the scene at the falls, but didn't see anything landed. Lots of fish jumping all over the place. Weather moving back in tomorrow and flying home Sunday AM... Oh well, next time

Can anybody recommend a good pair of socks for wet wading? I'm looking to drop chest waders come next summer during the hot months and would like to just get a pair of neoprene wading socks that come up to about the knee instead. I've searched on google and I'm having a hard time finding any neoprenses of height to them. Our river here is a consistent 50 degrees because water is constantly released out of the bottom of a lake, so it's freezing cold no matter what the month. I figured waders in July next year might be way too hot and shorts+knee high neoprenes would be comfortable enough. I appreciate any suggestions

nothing that fits in that category. you can maybe get long wet suit shorts and let your legs freeze.

when hot i roll down my waders to my waist. but they make waist high neoprene waders, and maybe a gortex one as well but not sure of that.

another thing might be to find a wet suit in the thrift store and cur off the legs. and wear booties.

A few fish pictures to post!

I went to visit my gf's family out in Oregon before starting back up at school and hired a guide for a half day to fish around Portland. Had a really wonderful experience fishing the Clackamas River. Ended up catching 3 steelhead (my first 3 ever) and like a dozen smaller rainbows. It was really neat because all of the fishing was sight fishing. The first two I caught on an egg pattern under an indicator. We stopped in a spot and then could see the steelies posted up, so would throw upstream and drift it over. Only took like 30 casts before I got an eat!

I had heard a lot about steelhead so it was v cool to catch one. They do fight awesome; jumping all over the river and lots of explosive runs. I think I probably got lucky to catch 3 the first time out as they seem to be quite elusive. I even caught one swinging a streamer ( had 2 others eat but missed the hook) which was incredible to watch in crystal clear water. The only bad thing is my phone crashed the day after and the only picture I got to keep was the first one I texted to my gf.

So here it is:

Andddddd more fishing pictures. I've been out a fair amount up here in upstate NY recently. Been catching some gorgeous rainbows in the Beaverkill, my biggest brown to date from the West Branch of the Delaware river and my first landlocked salmon from a local creek.

I've been fishing pretty exclusively with a new 4wt loomis I bought which has been awesome. Been doing a lot of tight-line nymphing as well as some indicator fishing recently.

Pictures are better than words, but it has been fun! Been trying to get up to the Salmon River for the last couple of weeks as the steelhead are rolling in but the weather and my schedule have been really uncooperative lately.
My fishing buddy caught this one but it's a really pretty picture

A nice 17" rainbow

Pretty bad picture but this was a 21" brown that was just fat as a hog. I would guess the fish was every bit of 5lbs. Was by myself so hard to take a picture without killing the fish.

And about a 21" landlock

Nice. My first real fly fishing trip was to the Willowemoc back when I was 11. That trip is burned into my brain as the definition of dry fly fishing for trout.

i fished those rivers many years ago. i cut my teeth on them. i still have flies from harry darbies famous shop as well as from some others.
i remember many daylight mornings on the junction pool trying to get a big one to come up.

BTW, went to Yosemite this past weekend...it's always nice in the park, but there was a storm two Mondays ago, so there was snow on the ground on the north side, but 120 was still open all the way through the park, and very few people around. Tuolumne Meadows all covered in snow, just amazing.

Fished a bit on the Merced River, as we were staying just outside the middle entrance of the park. Saw lots of swirls, but very few rises, so I was feeling smug when I put on a parachute emerger, but only put floatant on the parachute, and immediately caught about a 12" rainbow. Moved around to some other spots where I saw similar activity, and couldn't get another taker. Water super-low right now, so the pools are closer to still water tactics, I'd imagine.

Supposed to get some more weather next week, but I'm hoping to get up into the Tahoe/Truckee area before the end of the season (not that I ever keep anything these days).

Yeah, I read a bunch of reports on the sniffer, and the pics of the big LCT are just incredible. I'd definitely be more inclined to throw stuff with the spinning rod than wade out with a ladder WTF

I went there with my Dad like 35 years ago. I've got a picture somewhere of me holding about a 8" tui chub that I caught on a crappie jig lol

around 1973 its possible i was the first to use a ladder. anyway i had never seen one out there and since it was cold and you just needed to get out a little ways i took a small ladder out.

gave up that idea as it was too uncomfortable. besides i would catch them on a fly rod very close to shore. the trick was to fish the shore where the wind was blowing into as the chubs would be in close as the shore churned up food for them.

no just out from reno nevada on the reservation. in the 1930's and before it had huge trout. then they damed the river and diverted the water for irrigation and ruined the fishing as the fish couldnt spawn.

i saw an old picture of a man pulling a small wagon with a horse and the fish were stacked high and hanging off the back of it.

they regularly had 20 to 40 pounders i believe.

when i used to fish there mostly caught them 3 to 12 pounds and mostly 3 to 6

Been able to do a little more fishing recently. Went steelhead fishing in the Salmon River for the 1st time last Friday and had a spectacular morning; catching 3 gorgeous steelhead. I can definitely see how people get addicted -- they are an awful lot of fun. Hooked 3 and caught 3, fishing my 7wt and 10lb tippet. They were all pretty good sized fish, one was def >30" and another was right around that length I believe (although I was by myself and didn't measure or spend too much time playing around with them).

Also fished 2 days in Louisiana over the weekend but we had just god awful weather. Caught a few fish right away but hardly even took any pictures since we thought there would be more to come...boy were we wrong!

that looks like a redfish. usually when they are around you get a bunch.

id still go for the steellhead as they are my favorite fish to catch. you are knocking them dead. good for you.

Wow sweet! Is that the Salmon River outside of Welches, or the one by the coast (or a different one entirely?)

it's the salmon river in upstate ny (pulaski). tributary of lake ontario.

yea @ray, it was a little red. we caught a few over 10lbs but weather ruined us. i am at my parents in florida for thanksgiving so hoping to hook into some big fish. caught 2 tarpon last night on conventional gear (and broke off another 10 probably) but it would have been impossible to fly fish. going to try and get a big snook on fly one of these nights but it's a low probability operation.

Ray (or anyone else):

Have you ever fished in Serbia (or Bosnia, Montenegro or other nearby countries)? Trying to find a guide to go fishing for Huchen (these giant 'Danube Salmon') sometime in next couple of weeks.

no just austraila and new zealand. for overseas fishing.

good luck fishing over there it would be a blast. i see you are in paris and going to play there. games are good . and rake is atrocious. you have to play in games where they are deep and you can break them for a lot. or the rake will kill you.
the big money goes to the aviation club. and the bad players play the funny games of omaha. im working on steel head now but its tough.

the mess of regulations over here in europe is just astonishing. i feel paralyzed just trying to figure out when, where and how i can fish. mindblowing.

how was NZ? did you DIY or hire a guide? thinking of doing a NZ trip in april...appreciate any pointers

in nz you can walk and fish almost all of the great rivers. most is sight fishing as the water is super gin clear. there is little food so the few fish are scattered and are also fairly large.
big fish can best be caught at night with a mouse. we are talking big browns and rainbows.
as always the farther you get from your car the better the fishing is.

the very best is fly in fishing but then its helicopter and guides. i dont do that.
you do work very hard for a few fish in nz. but it is wonderful country.
salt water fishing is great in nz and australia. just becuase so many more fish are around.

To get back to some of the earlier posts in this thread, I finally decided to start giving a try to tying...it's pretty neat seeing these things taking shape, but my early efforts have been less than works of art.

The goal, obv, is to catch something on one of my questionable creations this season, so I've got a few more weeks to try to churn out a passable...probably either a pheasant tail or hare's ear, those seem to have worked the best for me in the Sierras.

I got a kit that included a book, which has been OK, but the better guide for me is to be able to read the book a couple of times and then keep a youtube video open in a tablet...ain't technology grand?
