OK WELL I DARE SOMEONE TO COME UP WITH A REASON THIS FILM DOESN'T COUNT.

im sure this one will be much less of a consensus top pick but it absolutely blew me away the first time i saw it and every subsequent viewing i just fall more and more in love with it.

and aside from the super unique compelling story and the fantastic acting writing and directing what really made this film blow my mind was the cinematography and insane ridic long single takes.

i absolutely love the entire cast and the leading man is one of my fav actors and the soundtrack was also fantastic.
the whole film is just a real trip and i've never seen anything else like it.

im sure i could have gotten this film in a later round and i'll end up getting sniped on a couple other films that i really love but i wanted to give this the recognition i think it deserves.

Spoiler:

Great acting, spectacular effects, and an interesting premise. What really did for me on this pick was an ambiguous ending that left you just a little uncertain as to exactly how it resolved.

True fact: when I saw this movie in a theater for the first time, the power went out in the theater with 20 minutes to go and didn’t come back on for ten minutes.

Inception.

Of course, nothing in Inherent Vice makes any sense--which makes it such a perfect film because nothing of that era made any sense at all. 1970 California was the focal point (I almost said omphalos, but such a word would be crazier than the film) of the world's insanity, and it's portrayed here without a bunch of romantic hindsight. Just a bunch of crazy loser hippies, crazy loser druggies, crazy loser cops, crazy loser cults, crazy loser politicos, etcetera.

Easily the greatest flick of the Millennium.

I'll PM Kioshk.

I'm taking Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Let's see, it's really trippy, high concept with sharp ideas but also very watchable. It's got a lot of postmodern tricks with the narrative but all the timeline fractures work in service of the story being told. Kate Winslet is very hot, even in blue hair. She's a weirdo you'd be glad to take to a beach on a cold rainy day. Jim Carrey ably shows the hopeless depths of depression, then the joy of seemingly being rescued, then how bad it feels to feel bad again. Michel Gondry directed it, the legendary Charlie Kaufman wrote it, really a breathtakingly original movie from top to bottom.

Round 1 Pick 5

Mulholland Drive, David Lynch, 2001

Mind-altering. That's the only way I can describe Lynch's film. You don't go into this one expecting to "figure it out." You go and let the colors, the music, the emotion wash over you like a dream. It shouldn't work: it has characters coming and going without any relation to what's supposed to be the plot; actors changing character in mid-movie; an ending that poses more questions than it answers...but it does work. Somehow, Lynch has concocted a feverish nightmare of a movie that only grows more insane - yet seductive - with each subsequent viewing.

My favorite Lynch, and one I know would be taken soon if I didn't grab it first.

Round 1 Pick 7

Owning Mahowny

No revolutionary take incoming, you all already know and agree with everything I'm about to say but I'm gonna say it anyway...

Best depiction of gambling addiction ever. I can't think of one that even comes close. Excellent acting from an excellent actor, PSH was one of the best actors of this generation if you ask me. I would watch anything with him in and even if the movie was trash I would still enjoy watching him on screen.

I know it's based on a true story but still everything comes across as so real. You feel like you're a fly on the wall rather than just watching a movie. Nothing takes you out of it for the entire run time. From Hurt's ruthless casino manager who gets the kitchen to make plate after plate of ribs without sauce, Minnie Driver as the unsuspecting other half, the casino worker he befriends who helplessly looks on as Hoffman self destructs and even the friend that he drags along to the casino who spends hours in the hotel room on his own.

All other gambling movies focus on the glitz and glamour and also show you the dark and seedy side of gambling. There's no glitz or glamour in this movie, it's all brutal reality and is even aptly set in the now depressing Atlantic City.

If there's anyone who's reading this who somehow hasn't seen Owning Mahowny then seek it out at your earliest convenience. You won't regret it.

The Dark Knight (2008)

I rarely go back a second time to the theater to re-watch a movie but I did so for The Dark Knight. After watching it, I went back two days later to the theater to view it again I liked it so much. It is one of those films that hang about you for a long time after seeing it. The sure sign of something great. Mulholland Drive has this same effect.

This is an exceptional film (especially for the genera of a comic book character brought to life on film), with a great cast that performs their roles well, which complement each other and provide overall satisfaction. The Dark Knight also has excellent pacing for an action thriller with the interjection of great drama into the action; it is not too fast or too slow and the action sequences are timed correctly to even out the film. The explorations of good vs. evil; predicaments of justice and law; and how we view each other are done well. The cinematography is wonderful. Some scenes are filmed in a dark but spectacular fashion. You can always nitpick at a few things – But I think this is one of best action/drama films done in this new century that will finally complete the total farce that humanity is; and is so good at; and so richly deserves.
