So, I'm watching Dawn Wall now....apparently, these two climbed El Capitan in 19 days, living on the wall, right?

And then a few years later, Alex Honold comes along and free-solos the ***** in 3 and half hours??

Why did it take Caldwell and Jorgeson 19 days to climb it - with ropes and equipment? I don't get it.

Others I considered:

Dig!
Gerry
Fat Girl
The Son
Super
Swiss Army Man
Blue Ruin
Mary and Max
The Babadook
Crystal Lake Memories
Free Fire
Frank
Kiss of the Dragon
The Man from Earth
Narc

On a different day when in a different mood any of the above might have been drafted

Because the dawn wall is basically unclimbable. Honold isn't gonna free solo the dawn wall. But I am no expert that is just the take I got after watching them both.

Yep, pretty much. Chalk and cheese really. Caldwell spent like 6 years of his life trying to find a possible route up the dawn wall, maybe more. Before that, nobody attempted it, because everyone just thought it was impossible. Even when they started the ascent, they weren't really sure it could be done.

It's not like Caldwell is some old lady climbing walls either. He actually holds the speed record for climbing El Cap, along with Honnold.

I think the dawn wall has only been climbed once since then, and that was by the guy in the youtube clip I posted earlier, Adam Ondra, who's widely regarded as the best climber on the planet. The climb is insanely difficult. Honnold has even said he doesn't think he could do it, and he's still got all his fingers!

It's funny when you watch the first ascent of El Cap. I think that guy was living on the wall for like 3 months or something.

So what route did Honold take on his free solo? I forget.

Alex climbed a completely different section of El Cap.
Dawn wall isn't possible to climb without ropes.

ya no doubt.

there are 2 other cool docs both available on Netflix that you should def watch.

meru should have probably been drafted it's incredible (made by the guy who co-directed free solo with his wife) and valley uprising is a cool doc about the history of rock climbing at Yosemite.

I highly recommend checking them out.

Start with Tokyo Drifter because it sorta makes sense. Then you might give Branded to Kill a couple of viewings. It's his most influential film. It's all style and sending up film cliches. It may not make sense.

In a way, Pistol Opera is a sequel to Branded to Kill. In a way, it's a refilming, with a female taking the lead hitman role. If Mulholland Drive or Kill Bill doesn't bother you, then you should be fine with Branded to Kill. Maybe.

I'd start with whatever was available. When Pistol Opera was released on DVD in the States, I ordered a copy and watched it with my then-wife. She liked it although she couldn't really follow it. I explained that it wasn't meant to be followed and she gave me "the look".

Tokyo Drifter used to show up on TCM when Robert Osborne was alive. Branded to Kill is on this Sunday/Monday at 4AM. I suspect it will be bowdlerized*. (Also, Ozu's "I was Born, but...")

Great draft. I prefer this era of movies so I'm glad you guys added a bunch to my watch list. This was a great way to give more substance to the personal reviews. There should be a top 10 personal favorite movie thread so we can know who we are dealing with.

My favorite Teams were Zeno or RBK.
