Write-up the 12th: Zero Dark Thirty

"Zero Dark Thirty" is an old military term, dating at least to the 60s, meaning Too ****ing early in the morning. It also has connotations of getting a jump on the day--of disrespecting the idea of sleeping. It's a pretty good title for Kathryn Bigelow's ode to the Myth of The Little Red Haired Girl and the Little Red Haired Girl's persistence, perseverance and, let's face it, relentlessness.

Here called Maya, Jessica Chastain plays the LRG to NSFW perfection.

A lot of attempts were made to politicize this film, but there's nothing political about it--it's another in a long line of heroic epics and a beautifully done one at that. Amazing that they can make a movie so thrilling when we all know the ending before we walk into the theater.

When Tommy Caldwell lost his index finger, his climbing career was over...or at least that's what everybody told him. You just can't climb at the highest level when that finger is so crucial. Did that stop him? Hell no! Then his marriage fell apart. So what do you do? Well, you dedicate years of your life into doing the hardest rock climb anybody has ever attempted, of course. Oh, and did I mention that he was kidnapped by rebels years earlier, and had to kill one of them in order to save the group? To say this guy has had a rough time of it would be an understatement.

With the help of a fellow climber, these two guys commit to a climb that most people thought was impossible. This is a story of survival, dedication, loss, hope, love, perseverance, failure and success. If you aren't tearing up by the end of this, then you just aren't human. I don't think I've ever rooted for two guys to succeed at something so hard in my life.

Oh, and stay tuned in the credits for a twist ending that you won't see coming!

When I saw this the first time, I watched it again the very next day. That's something I never do with documentaries.
Dawn Wall is great and a fantastic story. There is something about mountain climbing docs that make them extremely entertaining. There are at least 3 more climbing docs that would be draft worthy here. I have no interest in ever climbing a mountain or cliff myself but it extremely fascinating to see these experts in action.

NEW RULE:

For round 15, you are allowed to pick up to FIVE movies for your last round. You don't have to. But you can.

But only the FIRST ONE listed in your round of 15 picks will be off the table for those who pick after you. S in round 15, movies can be picked more than once. But try not to - it's more fun that way.

LOL I was gonna do that anyway and figure wtf are u gonna do about it kick me out of the draft

sick thing is I'm still gonna end up leaving a bunch off my list.

narrowing things I love down is pretty hard, thankfully much easier with women than movies or I'd be in real trouble.

Agree on all points.

You may have seen this before, but here is a very short documentary on Adam Ondra prepping for/doing the hardest ever climb. The amount of dedication these guys have for this stuff is next level.

(I guess this is technically drataftable, but it's not like anybody was going to.)

Xander still on the clock, but no way he picks what I'm picking:

round 14 pick:

Los Angeles Plays Itself, Thom Andersen, 2003

This is a unique documentary on how the movies shaped Los Angeles and how Los Angeles shaped the movies. It's more about how the films made in and around Hollywood showcased the various neighborhoods of Los Angeles, and how each era's culture and politics and economics were shown through the movies made there.

I've seen this twice now, and I'm never less than completely rapt with attention and awe. If you like your clip docs sprinkles with prescient and important commentary, this is the movie for you.

Seriously great film.

My 15th round pick!

Enemy, Denis Villenueve, 2013

This is a mind-bending masterpiece, and probably Villenueve's best film. Jake Gyllenhaal plays a university professor who finds out he has a double....and he seeks him out. This is a mediation on male identity and sexuality, and it's a freaky, freaky film. The ending shot is justifiably famous and perplexing. If you haven't seen it, you're in for a disturbing treat.
