Fat Byron, when he was mad and bad, was dangerous to know.

Are these really your other reasons? Link to study proving this? Because your statement [backed up by nothing other than your own lazy proclamation] is not at all obvious to me.
This one shows that it is predictive of BMI:

There are several others, if you pubmed that one and look at related articles, or just look through the works cited in that one you will find several more.

And as far as predictive of financial/career success, the Stanford Marshmallow experiment is the classic one but there are at least dozens more.

Lots of CEOs get whipped in dungeons, you know?
Its more predictive than IQ, which for as much as people want to malign IQ, is still saying a lot.

OK, I read your link...and I don't see the significance of the study at all due to its many glaring shortcomings. One, the study size was 60 children...that sample size is way too small to extrapolate anything from. Two, they're using children (ages 8-12), who by their very definition have difficulty realizing the consequences of their actions. This is why the justice system does not sentence children and juveniles to the same degree and manner that they sentence adults for similar crimes. I don't see how you can possibly correlate children's behavioral patterns and proclivities to that of adults. And three, their entire premise is flawed because their prize ranking is based on what exactly? Who's to say that a pencil is worth less than a basketball and because you're the child that likes to draw and prefers pencils to basketballs, that you are therefore less able to delay your gratification? There's absolutely no logic to their prize rankings except what the researchers have arbitrarily assigned. You can't base whether a child is able to delay gratification or not off something like that. It makes no sense. Oh, and the fourth problem that the study itself mentions is that it is too short at a mere 12 weeks.

There are other studies, feel free to peruse. Its not established as law but the preponderance of data suggests that both obesity and low economic status are positively correlated with poor impulse control and strong time preference and suggest a causative relationship.

Re: Fat People: Disgust and Social Stigma

The argument that eating at least reasonably healthy is expensive is quite ridiculous.

We buy 50 lb bags of white rice from the asian market for <25$.

ALDI sells almost all produce for insanely cheap, and grilling two big bags of chicken breats of sundays gives me a weeks worth of healthy delicious meals for about a buck each. I never eat fast food and even eat some organic items and still spend about 250-350$ a month to eat for two. How much would it cost to eat every meal at mcdonalds a month for 2 people? 500$?

The truth is that people eat fast food because they are lazy. They are also fat because they are lazy. Being poor would be even more motivation to cook every meal and never eat out imo.

Of course, you can go to walmart (which is surprisingly expensive for food).

There are a few cheap places near me in Los Angeles, but you have to be comfortable eating green meat and vegetables with fruit flies swarming everywhere. Oh, and the smell is just obnoxious. Did I mention that much of this cheap food rots in 24 hours or less?

Re: Fat People: Disgust and Social Stigma

I'm trying to eat less since I was at my all-time fattest last week. I eat fast food all the time and it wouldn't be unusual for me to order like a giant cheeseburger combo from Sonic AND the bacon onion cheese hotdog thing they had going for a while. For lunch. Then eat a giant dinner and snack all day long and drink one or two dark beers a day or so.

It's still not the best option but I still order fast food but here's the thing the last couple days at lunch I've ordered from like Jack in the Box or Burger King but I ordered the kids meals. You get a cheeseburger the size of the adult one from the 1980s, small fries, and a reasonable drink for $2.99 at both places. And it fills me up until dinner easily. And I weigh 215 pounds. $3.24 with tax and I'm full until dinner. I'm also lifting weights every other day so it's not like I'm not needing fuel. Most people just eat way too much without realizing it. When you really try you can get by on a very small amount of food.

I even got a toy in my happy meal today for my 20 month old son to play with.

No idea. It just said "your work in the Masters thread". I don't even know if it was from a golf forum mod or SE mod because I was posting crucially in both threads.

I'm 6'0" and was 222 last week - an all-time high.

Re: Fat People: Disgust and Social Stigma

That's trivially easy when all you cut out is beer, soda, snacking, and gorging at lunch and dinner. Don't see at all what's unhealthy about that. The 222 number was likely a couple pounds inflated as it was right after a workout where I drank about 50 oz. of water in a little over a half-hour.

Also I typed "215" because it was a roundish number for people reading the thread to realize that large men can get by on such a "small" meal.

I can "drop" 7lbs in ~12 hours...if I weighed myself at about midnight after drinking beer for 3 or 4 hours and eating, then again after jogging/biking/swimming/steam room the next day, I bet I'd go from 220ish to 213ish.

not exactly cutting weight, just more of a water thing obv. but weight does fluctuate a lot, especially if you drink a lot of water.

ARC, nothing specific even? that sucks, especially during the masters. I, for one, could have read about your 26 handicap at least 4 or 5 more times last weekend.

also, what kind of 220 are you? I work out almost every day and have been "stuck" at ~215 for months, but there's more weight in my shoulders/chest than stomach now.

I also ate 20 chicken wings and pizza the last two nights. lol

Getting nearly a gallon of water out of you in 12 hrs is probably a pretty terrible idea, too.

Not even sure exactly what got me banned. I did say Brandel Chamblee needs to die. But there's nothing wrong with that because we all die. Everyone needs to die eventually. I don't want anyone being immortal.

Good luck in your weight losing efforts, ARC. You're on the right track. Look into cutting back on those carbs. Carbs trigger the release of insulin and that's bad news.

Great job, ARC! That's very impressive. I think you are right when you talk about smaller portion sizes being sufficient to fill us up. And the kids meal thing, that sounds like something MrSeagull would do
