I mean, good for Lena Dunham - she's obviously talented, but holy cow she is the very definition of homely. Can't believe she looks like that in her 20s.

Have you noticed how all the fatty models the media have been trying to push still have traditionally attractive features? They have overweight, if not downright fat bodies, but their facial features and everything else about them is still very traditionally 'attractive'

Why isn't there a big social movement to declare this woman attractive?

Why is judging someone's fat body unattractive somehow worse or different than thinking someone's crooked nose or screwed up eyes are unattractive?

The ironic thing of course, is that if anything you should feel more sympathy for the person with unattractive features, as they were indeed born that way. Fat people deserve even worse scorn because almost all of them have brought their attractiveness upon themselves.

Despite what some people seem to believe, what people find physically attractive is driven far more by biology and evolution than arbitrary societal conventions. The societal conventions are largely just a manifestation of innate biological preferences.

Infants react far more positively to "attractive" faces than "unattractive" ones, for example.

There has been a **** ton of science done over the past few hundred years regarding physical beauty and physical attractiveness.

Of course science is the last thing fatties want to talk about anyway.

If you're attracted to 15-17 year olds, just beware that acting on it is illegal in many places.

Why modern society has deemed post-pubescent teenagers as off-limits sexually is an entirely separate discussion of course. It is certainly way more of a societal construct than anything rooted in biology. Plenty of men still find 15-17 year old girls quite attractive as they always have and always will. It's just something modern society has now deemed out of bounds for a lot of reasons, most of them valid.

Do you hate the fatties? Do you feel disgusted by them? Do you choose to not associate with people who are overweight? Do you think they have poor character because of their heftiness?

It's funny that the foreigners often stereotype Americans as all being fat, but we Americans know that only the poor ignorant underclass Walmart shoppers among us are really fat.
I'm like your parents. I can tolerate pretty much any lifestyle. But i hate fat people. It's a visceral hate too. I don't really understand it because they've done nothing to me (other than occasionally fill up the seat next to me). They are generally nice people, just like anyone else. I know it's wrong for me to feel this way, and i never act on it, but i can't get rid of the feeling. I guess it's because i think they have a choice (unlike gays, people of color, etc.). But even that doesn't hold water bc i don't believe in free will. Oh well.

The same society that deems them out of bounds has no problem sexualizing them in the media, in schools, and pageants.

Excellent point. It really just further illustrates that deep down everyone knows the societal rule is artificially imposed, for lack of a better word.

If people thought it was honestly "sick" or "wrong" to be attracted to 16-17 year old girls, that stuff wouldn't exist in the mainstream.

So instead we have this sort of emperor's new clothes situation, where everyone sorta knows that 15-17 year old girls can be sexually attractive, however you're not supposed to talk about it and people will feign outrage if you do, even though they also know it to be true.

Relating this back to fatties, the same situation could occur there eventually. It may one day become a huge societal taboo to openly disparage a fat person and everyone may have to pretend they aren't put off by it, but the biological/evolutionary "ewww" will still be in your brain.

Hello, I'm new to the Lounge so I'm not gonna use up my Sunday morning reading this whole thread. However, I will share my thoughts after reading the first two and last two posts in this thread.

Indeed the stigma is real. You forgot "bat**** crazy" however in your list of qualities that are looked down upon by society.

Ain't that some ****. Perhaps their outward compassion for others is in vain.

No. Only if they smell really bad. One of my best friends is >300 pounds and is a strong ass mother ****er that I wouldn't want to tangle with. I like having him on my side. Some indeed have a chip on their shoulder, but I believe that's usually due to being outcasts and it's not due to the obesity itself.

Was relistening to Jethro Tull's 2nd album today, Stand Up, and came across the gem Fat Man. I'd forgotten this, excellent song. Get a load of this:

Don't want to be a fat man
People would think that I was just good fun
Would rather be a thin man
I am so glad to go on being one

Too much to carry around with you
No chance of finding a woman who
Will love you in the morning and all the night time too

Don't want to be a fat man
Have not the patience to ignore all that
Hate to admit to myself
Half of my problems came from being fat

Won't waste my time feeling sorry for him
I seen the other side to being thin
Roll us both down a mountain
And I'm sure the fat man would win

It's got a great twangy folk-rock sound too! Way ahead of their time, I'd say.
