Complete opposite for me, the temp of the water makes a huge difference. Sometimes if I haven't turned the hot water on and need a shave using luke warm water it is terrible compared to really hot.

Absolutely go with the alum block. Here's the cheap one I got: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Ali-Biyikli-...-/110787820941

I get the same reaction when the weather changes. The red blotchy thing is usually a case of dryness from the colder weather. Try the shaving cream and also try some face moisturizer.

- and for me personally, my skin actually does bet when I shave with cold water. The hot/cold pore thing is a bit of a myth. Water is important, the temp is not.
Just switching to a real brush and cream will make that much of a difference?

Sucks being in China. Since Chinese people can't grow beards, the accessories are nearly impossible to find. Definitely an annoying flaw when it comes to being an expat.

I'm able to do the wet-shaving. Just not at the quality you guys do.

When I first ordered my gear, my brush, cream and aftershave arrived before my razor. So, I shaved with my mach 3 and new products. I also followed a good prep routine as described in this thread. I was shocked at the difference it made immediately. I got a closer shave and didn't have the normal irritation that I used to get with the canned goo.

can someone give me cliffs on the differences between merkur safety razors? are they all essentially the same except for different handles/aesthetics. They're similarly priced but it seems like there's a million variations.

Differing gaits which determine how aggressive the shave is. If you are new the 34C HD is the standard as it is pretty gentle and good for beginners.

There are differences in the razor head. Some are closed comb (best choice if you're a newbie imo), some open comb, some slant. Then there are differences in the handle length, weight and style.

TBH, assuming you're a newb - I would look at the Edwin Jagger or Muhle razors because they're a much higher quality product. A EJ DE89 or Muhle R89 would be a great choice that is comparable to a Merkur 34c, but it's a bit nicer.

Also - If you order from a UK site like shaving.ie or connaughtshaving.com you will save a TON if you're willing to wait 1.5-2 weeks for your razor. (shipping is cheap too).

I just won a free straight! So, looks like I'll be taking the plunge. It figures, I finally got my DE gear all set to where I don't have to buy anything, and now I'll probably get sucked into the straight world.

Good luck! My straight razor experience has been interesting. It gives me a really close shave but time constraints are forcing me to go back to safety razors for weekdays. A straight razor can easily take me 13-16 min if I want to be thorough. I'm working on it though! There's a lot of novelty to using a straight razor too.

Thanks for the suggestion, I'll look into it.

No, that's cool.

From a practical standpoint, all double-edged blades ARE in fact basically the same, which is to say any of them will fit and work in your razor.

There are people who will get all jimmie rustled about how brand X is the best and the others are ****. There are differences between blades, but it seems that the "best" is pretty much particular to your own face. Try a sample pack (there are a bunch of people on ebay who will bundle a bunch of 5- or 10-packs of different brands and run through two or three blades from each one and see what you like.

This. Then buy 20 ten packs of what you like and don't worry about blades for two years.

Agreed 100% with the sample pack.

For the record...just tried a Dorco blade in my Futur and it worked well..not as aggressive as the Merkur or Feather blades, but no irritation either.

Keep your blade stash somewhere dry, i.e., not in the bathroom.

+1 on blade sampler. They are all different depending on your skin type and which razor you're using....luckily blades are cheap (for the most part). My favorite blade in my 34c and Futur was Astra, but in my R41 they are an absolute nightmare. Other people love them in the R41....so there ya go.

I just transitioned from the Astras in my sampler pack to the Feather blade yesterday. The Astras were good, and they lasted 3-4 shaves on a heavy beard. The feather blade was an unbelievably close shave with zero irritation. I'm using a standard Merkur safety , #178 I think.

Okay, I'm using a Merkur safety and the standard blades that it came with are not sharp enough for my beard. Based entirely on this little factoid, where do I turn?
