I'm going to be a junior in college this coming year, and will likely interview at a decent number of finance and consulting type places so I'll need to look decent in the interviews. The only suit I have is a pos (it still fits though) I got from men's warehouse for my high school graduation. I basically know nothing about dress clothes.

Money is not a huge issue, but I'm not looking to drop 5k on a single suit. Thinking 500-1000 a suit and looking to get 2-3 plus maybe 1 blazer to wear to slightly less formal events like employer networking events. I will also need some new shoes. I am looking for advice for specific brands and styles as well as good places/times to buy them. Also from what I've been read it seems like everyone advises getting anything you get off the rack tailored so thats what I plan on doing.

I realize this is a pretty long post, but I'm pretty clueless and would appreciate some advice. Thanks in advance for the suggestions.

I've had great luck on eBay thrifting used Allen Edmonds shoes and Hickey Freeman suits. I would highly recommend browsing eBay for used, higher-end, fully canvassed suits, if you are not opposed to the idea of buying used (I would check out Hickey Freeman, Oxxford, Brioni, Canali, Zegna, though I don't know much about suits, so I would like to hear others' opinions there). Measure the suit that fits you well, and use those measurements to find one that fits.

buy 1 suit for interviewing. buy more if/when you land a job that requires you to wear suits.

you're way too likely to get a suit that fits horribly this way. not recommended.

I'm 23 and have gone through that whole finance/consulting interview process before. The image you're looking to portray is a confident, trustworthy young person that has his sh*t together.

You need to buy an age appropriate suit. Going to a men's warehouse and buying what the sales person recommends is going to guarantee a suit with poor fit/fabric and will probably look like your father's handmedown.

For the types of jobs you're interviewing for I'd recommend:
-A solid lighter charcoal suit, no stripes or windowpanes. I say lighter charcoal because some charcoal suits appear black, and these should be avoided.
-A non-iron white shirt. The collar should not button down.
-Dark brown shoes with a matching plain leather belt.
-Boring striped or dotted ties. Avoid complex patterns and yellows and pinks.

The fit of the suit and shirt is where most people fail. Rather than write a novel about things to avoid in suits, I'll just direct you to styleforum.net where they tend to be fairly helpful.

Before you start shopping you should really have an understanding of what is appropriate and what isn't, and what's a good fit and what isn't. But you don't need to spend a lot of money to look exceptional. I have a $225 on sale suit from jcrew and some $100 allen edmonds shoes, and I don't think I could be noticeably better dressed for under $1500.

Anybody have any specific jeans or shoes to wear with flannels for the fall?

Depends on your figure, what look you're going for and how much you are willing to spend.

I'm willing to spend like $250ish total, so nothing too out of control.

I'm just shy of 6 feet tall and weigh like 165-170.

Thanks for the post, I'm in the same position this year and have been thinking lately about what to buy.

Can you set out say with a $2k budget (just for example) exactly what you'd buy suit/shoe/shirt wise?

I'm in the UK so some prices may be different but the general principles should be the same.

I don't think Jos' quality is very good, but I do know a good number of very successful people who wear and like that brand so I doubt wearing their suits will hurt your career.

I need dress shoes to go with a suit in solid dark navy. Can anyone help me out with a check list of details to look for, starting with the most obvious and ending with the less noticeable?

Like: black -> leather soles -> round toe -> etc.

Grad student so the absolute most I am willing to spend is around $200. Most Allen Edmonds are outside of my budget, while the ones around my price-point seem to have rubber soles (someone told me to avoid these).

PS. I'd rather buy something in person than on ebay. Not confident on sizing, live in Canada, no paypal account, possibility of fakes etc.

For anyone looking for suits/shirts, I got some great deals at a Brooks Brothers outlet. Gotta run good and hope they have all your sizes... but I made out like a bandit... 2 suits and 2 shirts for well less than 1k.

Dunno if there's a stigma over Brooks Bro suits or whatever ("off the rack," I guess), but for someone like me who needed a few suits pretty quick it was a good way to go. Just had to have a tailor touch up the sizing for me but that cost less than 100.

Brooks Brothers 1818 line is pretty good, but from what I understand most of the outlet stuff (the "346" line) generally isn't that great.
