I like the Vibergs, but I'm kinda an Alden truther. I recently picked these up for the second time.

The advice about making sure you get the right fit is the best advice you'll get. You may know this, but "nice" shoes are made on "lasts" - wooden moulds that the leather is stretched over. Different lasts fit very differently, so an Allen Edmonds #5 will fit different than an Alden Trubalance last boot or Plaza last oxford. Going in and getting measured and fit for the specific style you want is really the key to making shoes comfortable.

So since I'm in fashion spew mode, which companies are considered the "Aldens" of denim?

there is a whole thread dedicated to denim. I think the difference (for me) is that nice shoes are just a better version of what you're already wearing. you can get a pair of Alden or Viberg boots and then just wear them for years with as much or little care as you want. denim is like..a confusing world to me with when you can wash, when you can't ,getting fit right, etc

I just buy Bonobos denim and call it a day

There's really no consensus favorite as it depends on what you like from a material and fit perspective. My favorite has always been Samurai, but also really like The Flat Head. I've also had a couple pair of Gustins that I never loved, but wore into the ground.

Fwiw I'm currently wearing the Samurai S710 contest denim for the Samurai / Oni contest. I went a little nuts and pressure cooked them though, so not only did the tag crumble off, but they bleed like a emmereffer

JCrew with 40% off full-priced items for first time ever today and with free shipping. Sale lasts for a while but free shipping goes away. East Dane has its black friday sale going with 15% off $200, 20% off $500 and 25% off $800. Little better thresholds than last year.

Heh - I just got done buying the Classic American Blazer I've wanted for quite a while but refused to pay $350 for. Solid sale (too bad it never applies to Alden)

I can take some pics later but they aren't very impressive as I'm on the formal end of business casual at my office and really only get one or two wears / wk. I'll tell ya what tho, pressure cooking them had a sting effect on the indigo as they bleed more that any other pair of raw denim I've owned.

Here's maybe the fashion deal of the holiday. Bond Peacoat in Navy for more than 50 percent off at Bloomingdale's. Available in every size except they don't carry XS unfortunately, or I'd get in on this. It's marked 40 percent off from $695 to $417, but put it in your cart and it goes down to $367. Then sign up for Bloomingdale's emails and get a 10% off code that stacks, so that should make it about $330.

Looks nice. I'm hoping to land this navy quilted jacket at Apolis on sale at end of season. I thought of getting this cardigan from JCrew sale but decided if I'm going to get that it's going to be at a steep end-of-season discount.

That's cool, 1a2a3a. I checked out the socks as well. I have a lot of AnonymousIsm socks, a couple of the ones being offered by JCrew, but decided that I like the quarter-size ones better and don't need any more full length ones. I can't get with the style on most of the chup socks.

I think if you sign up for texts offers from Bloomingdale's you can actually get 15% off plus another 6% back through ebates, which would essentially make the Billy Reid Bond peacoat $293 plus tax.

FYI, you can knock another 6% off of that $330 with ebates.

Yeah, I'm tempted to get it in small and try to get it tailored. I've tried on a S and XS before and there didn't seem to be that much difference to me. Both were too big in the sleeves and around the midsection. But given that and that I have little opportunity to wear such a thick coat in Los Angeles, I might resist.

Edit: Sold out in small to help me resist!

FYI to all, that Bond Peacoat is now down to $308 in the cart for me (after tax) with 15% off code.

Had an AMEX offer for spend $150, get $30 back, and ebates is now at 10%, so grabbed a Medium for about $260 shipped. Sick deal.

Do anyone have a black shoe recommendation that goes well with a suit?

I'm looking for a pair that is under $100, preferably closer to the $50-$75 dollar mark. Some qualities that I would like in the shoe is not to be too flashy and to be able to be worn with slacks as well. I don't wear suits often but am looking to get a solid pair that can be worn when occasions arise.

I currently wear this pair with slacks and a button down shirt (no tie). Even though I like the shoe I don't think its suit material given it doesn't have laces: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Yeah, you need something with laces and a round toe. Never ever buy square toed shoes again.

The problem is that lots of dress shoes under $100 are going to be very uncomfortable.

This shoe "looks" mostly right

https://www.amazon.com/Steve-Madden-...661614011&th=1

But I doubt it's very comfortable or will last more than a couple of months.

If you're up for it, try looking for a used pair of Allen Edmonds Park Avenues on ebay.

Good dress shoe for a decent price (down to $98 from original $200). I like Cole Haan, relatively comfortable and easy to dress up or down. I would do the dark brown myself.

I would be relatively wary about ordering used shoes that are very marked down on ebay. I have had two experiences where the shoe is shined with a ton of shoe polish to make it look good in the photos, but in reality is pretty beat up.

A) this would still be better than $50 on dockers shoes

B) you can avoid most of this by looking at the soles. There are tons of park avenues out there that have hardly been worn.
