Because they had a 10% off thing at the time. I tried it on at the store in Soho beforehand.

Heads up for Doug and others--

Just saw that apparently if you use the code "FRIENDS" on the actual Billy Reid website you get 20% off, dunno if that works for other stuff too.

I stay away from all of their clothes, which I find ill fitting. I have a couple JAB ties that I like. They are nothing special, but I think they are of better quality than my department store ties and my Charles Tyrwhitt tie. I have their cedar tie hanger and belt spinner, which I find handy. Bought a couple pairs of socks with my shoe trees, so I'll see what I think of those.

Had a chance to try on a medium (but not a small) and liked the fit. Medium was slightly roomy in just a t shirt, but with any bulk (or 10 more pounds) it would be perfect. If I were going to be the same size forever and always wear it with no bulk underneath I imagine a small would've been right for me though.

Anyways, TY for the tip, just bought one in charcoal. I already have a very slim navy peacoat so getting a roomier charcoal one was a good way to avoid any feelings of guilt or wastefulness.

Nice man, it's a real solid coat. I've already gotten tons of compliments.

Had an inspiration that what the gray AE Long Branch really needed were blue laces. Here's the difference.

In a strange bit of news, Men’s Wearhouse is apparently putting in a bid for the purchase of dress-shoe retailer Allen Edmonds. At the same time, they’re also preparing themselves against a possible hostile takeover from Jos. A. Bank. The purchase of Allen Edmonds is rumored to be in the low hundreds of millions of dollars. It’s unclear whether this will affect Jos. A. Bank’s bid for Men’s Wearhouse.

Just came here to post about that. Makes sense to me. If MW buys AE and the acquisition convinces enough of the MW shareholders to wait and see how it plays out, then JAB might not be able to offer enough of a premium to convince MW shareholders to sell.

Devastating news for AE quality though.

It seems like an odd acquisition. MW doesn't even sell AE shoes. And it seems kind of odd to sell shoes that are more expensive than your suits. I just don't see most men who shop at MW buying AE shoes. Maybe J&M or something, but not AE.

I agree it's odd but

A) they may not necessarily decide to sell AEs at MW.

B) there's no reason to to think they're necessarily going to lower the quality of AEs

I would guess the most likely outcome if the deal goes through is that current products stay basically the same and they have some sort of diffusion line to sell at MW (AE already does this to an extent, they make mainline AE golf shoes that retail for $350ish and they also do a diffusion line co-branded with Jack Nicklaus that retail for like $150).

If it really is a defensive play to avoid a hostile takeover, then I don't think owning AE and not changing anything would be enough to convince MW shareholders not to sell to JAB at the premium JAB will be willing to offer. The MW pitch to shareholders would basically have to be "The PE shop that owned AE before us undervalued them at their preexisting structure/model, and we don't have to change a thing to alter AE's trajectory to easily justify the price we paid, and accordingly our stock is worth at least 40% more than it was before the acquisition." That isn't an easy sell.

I think it is more likely that MW uses the AE brand to try to drive shoe sales in the $100-$200 range with more stuff of similar crappy quality as the existing "AE by Allen Edmonds" line sold through the MW network. Hopefully they leave AE's higher quality stuff alone (though I wouldn't be surprised to see a small uptick in MSRP of the staples or a small downtick in quality, ultimately flowing through to the bottom line) but I also wouldn't be surprised if the high end stuff gradually disintegrates and follows the same trajectory as Cole Haan post its purchase by Nike in the late 1980s.

I agree with this, but I still don't see the rationale for the acquisition.

Actually if it's just some desperation play to stave off a JAB buyout then they'll probably **** it up. If it's something they had planned out and just happens to coincide with the takeover attempt then who knows.

I feel like the likelihood this ultimately hurts AE quality(and/or pricing) is way higher than the chance of it improving AE quality.

So everlane sent me an email with some new cashmere sweaters they're making. Thoughts? How's the price at $120/shirt? Wouldn't mind getting a couple, they throw out their usual "super high quality" shpiel too. Not sure what to believe, but they look ok.

GQ had a piece about this last month

http://www.gq.com/style/fashion/2013...rdable-quality

Basic idea is when buying cashmere buy Italian or Scottish. Looks like these are Mongolian.

Yes, but where are the Italian or Scottish $120/per?

I'm not sure how to answer that question because i'm not sure if you're trolling or not.

The article is saying that you get what you pay for with cashmere.

I agree, and Mongolian seems like just a fancy way of saying China, where most poor quality cashmere sweaters come from. But perhaps they are decent mid-level cashmere.

"grade A" cashmere is obviously a marketing term, if you're OK with that, that's fine, but expect about the same as the JAB cashmere that you can get for like half that price if you time it right.
