Tried this on today.

I thought for sure I'd want a medium (I wear a 40/42 depending on the jacket), but a large was basically perfect. I can almost guarantee you want a medium or even a large, especially if you are ever planning on wearing a sweater or something under it. You can always get the sides tailored if you want, but the large fit perfectly on my arms/shoulders/chest and it sounds like we have similar builds.

I also tried on this: http://www.billyreid.com/product/ast...rey-tweed.html and really, really liked it. It looks meh on the model here, but especially unbuttoned this thing was incredible.

I'm not sure which one I want to get. The peacoat is a bit more typical, but the tweed coat I can wear with a suit and so is more flexible.

i haven't bought one in a while but every suit i've ever had from BR is garbage. i'm pretty cheap when it comes to clothes and always looking for a bargain, but for your wedding i would say it's not even close between this and dropping 500-700 on a nice MTM suit.

I don't recommend BR but you aren't going to get a nice MTM for $700.

I was blown away at how bad the BR suits were, and I definitely do not have an eye for quality when it comes to this stuff.

I got within 4' away and could immediately see how shoddy it was.

I got a MTM suit from thickasthieves.com for $650 including tax and shipping, and he had some fabrics that would have been $100 less. Also, possibly the tax was only because I'm in California. I'm not sure. Kent Wang MTM suits go as low as $750.

I like and use these sites pretty regularly:

http://www.blanklabel.com/ (work and casual shirts)
http://www.moderntailor.com (shirts/slacks)

Just found this site and ordered some of their stuff because of how cheap it was:
http://www.combatantgent.com

Has anyone used the Trunk Club services yet?

Obviously I've read the same things. I was wondering if the monogram ones might be better and $300 is pretty cheap.

The same day I posted that I contacted about a half dozen local clothiers. Only two sent estimates, but one does bespoke suits starting at $900 and will come to your house/office/etc. to do the measurements.

Kent Wang looks awesome. He, and I'm sure this is intentional, makes me very nervous about the MTM process. Following his suggestion I'll have spent at least $1500 by the time I get a suit in the color I want (charcoal tester + custom + potentially alterations).

Also, this is more of a PSA, but AE is having a 15-30% off everything sale on their site. I think I might finally pick up some 5th Avenues at $240. If I can choose a color...

Interesting, thanks. I'll be in Charleston for a wedding in a week, hopefully I can try it in store as well. If not I'll probably still take a stab on a medium based on your report. I had been concerned I would actually want a small; there's no way I could ever need a large but if medium tends to be a bit small for someone who wears a 42 then I'd feel good about it for me.

IMO, if you're a normal shape you probably do not need bespoke or even MTM to have a perfectly fitting suit. If you just try on a ****load of different brands you will eventually find something that fits perfectly in the shoulders with the right amount of padding, the right gourge, the right stance/waist, and right length. From there any alterations would be relatively minor.

Granted you need to be able to evaluate if all those parameters work for you and most sales people will be of little to no help. Then you need to be able to communicate with a tailor exactly what you want tweaked fit-wise, so it isn't an easy process by any means. But if I were looking to maximize my value on a fixed budget I'd probably be bargaining hunting online for suits that I knew would be a very good fit on me without any tailoring, and then spending $100 tops at the tailor.

These are great option but are by no means a nice suit. Even off the rack you are paying $1,500+ for a truly nice suit unless you find the right discounts.

That being said, I lived off of $700-$1000 MTM for years and they were great value and am just lucky enough now to take a bit of a step up in quality.

I now realize that my Martin Greenfield MTM with super 150s and measure by their head tailor is not only much higher quality but fits immensely better than $700 MTM. Best world is where you find a great MTM tailor who knows how to fit but will make a $700 suit. Otherwise you end up with the fit like a post earlier in this thread with an Indochine suit that looked awful. A couple of the junior guys in our office have found a guy who does a great job fitting at good prices but as with everything you tend to get legit tailors who actually know how to fit as you move up in quality. Great tailors just rarely sell suit that cheap.

For 5th Aves, I think I like Walnut the best but suspect Bourbon or Brown Burnished are more versatile. Thoughts?

meh, maybe "nice" isn't the best word but it's all relative. i mean nice relative to what most guys wear to their weddings, which is generally dog ****. and $500 spent on a competent MTM two piece is going to be better than anything you can buy at BR at any price.

most guys outside of very lucrative professions can be among the best dressed in their place of business wearing nothing better than well-selected low end MTM.

speaking of martin g, i mentioned a few pages back that i was thinking of pulling the trigger on a greenfield OTR suit on gilt. not quite in territory like you are for their MTM or bespoke stuff even at a steep discount, but this suit is allegedly made with all the same construction techniques (full bemberg, hand stitched yadda yadda) and it was like $700. i love it. needed nothing out of the box except the hem on the trousers. couldn't believe my luck.

Traditionally more versatile but you can rock walnut with a suit these days.

I agree Ratio is solid. Ledbury is also good, though I wouldn't say their slim is actually slim, more of athletic. Personally I like the CT extra slim a lot. From what I've experienced on myself (I'm 15/33 to 15.5/33, 12 inch drop):

BB Extra Slim: Narrow overall in the torso, especially in the chest. Because of this I have to size up to a 15.5/33, but the shoulders are just slightly on the large side here. If you're skinny without much drop (like 6-7 inches) I'd think this would be your best fit if you buy your normal size.

BB Slim: More drop than the extra slim so it's a better choice if you're muscular. 15/33 fits me correctly in the shoulders, is marginally tight in the chest and marginally loose in the waist, but still overall decent.

CT Extra Slim: Slightly more drop than the BB Slim but runs slightly narrow in the shoulders. I size up to a 15.5/33 here and the fit is pretty darn good overall, maybe a tad bit loose in the waist, but the shoulder to chest ratio is perfect. If you have a big drop (like 9+ inches) I think this fit and sizing up may be your best option.

CT Slim: Pretty similar to BB slim, maybe slightly narrower in the shoulders and waist. 15 is too tight in the shoulders for me and 15.5 is too big in the waist.

maybe for smaller guys the ratios in the CT shirts work, but their 17.5 extra slim is designed for a guy who is like 6'3 and 320 lbs.

I actually really like the CT extra skims. I'm 6'4 200 and I find the 16.5 fits really well. Could be a tiny bit more skim around the waist but definitely better than a lot of other stuff I've tried and hard to beat for the price

Not for this smaller guy. My 15 is a tent. Worse, I paid extra for them to shorten the sleeves to 31.5 for my Tyrannosaurus arms, the same specification I put for the custom ratioclothing shirt. The ratio shirt fits perfectly in the arms but at least the one CT shirt I've worn so far was too short.

Not sure what I'm doing here, but these Allen Edmonds Long Branch in gray were on clearance for $147. I got them a half size and a width up from my bourbon Daltons in order to accommodate thicker socks and because my Daltons are tight. That was a good move, as these are much more comfortable.

I have both the long branch (in dark brown) and Daltons (walnut) and while they're both great, I wear the LBs more. They're super comfy and extremely versatile. I've worn them with a suit in the rain and out dove hunting.

They're definitely one of AE's more underrated models.
