Just ordered a pair of those AE strands from Nordstrom. Been looking for a pair of brown shoes for a while, not sure how I didn't stumble upon these sooner since I've been eyeing the Dalton's for months now.

What do you guys do for shorts? Basically my wife hates every pair I own.

shorts are the worst, you're basically just trying to minimize how ******ed you look as a best case scenario.

If it's hot enough that I absolutely need to wear shorts and I'm doing something more formal than mowing the yard then I'm probably going to have either patchwork madras or seersucker on, depending on how ballsy I'm feeling.

Do want:

Carmina ruby shell cordovan (terrible photos, size 12uk, $550 opening bid on ebay).

Those are really weird boots IMO, and it took me a minute to figure it out but I think it's the combo of (super casual) speed eyelets up top with formal closed lacing and blind eyelets down low.

Personally I think the Alden cap toe cordovan boot has a more coherent look. If you want something dressier I think AE makes the 5th street boot in cordovan.

that's super-nitty, I know. I would just ignore my post unless you have like level 75 assburgers.

I am also not splashing out that much money on boots - especially for a non-staple item. But I do like them, even with the speed hooks.

.
trying wearing a balmoral boot without speed hooks. getting them on and off is a 15 minute process. it's the right choice to put speed hooks on them

That's what you get for wanting a balmoral boot. Let them eat cake.

Listen to your wife. I've never ever seen a dude wearing shorts and thought to myself "yeah, that looks good."

I wear shorts if I'm playing tennis or sitting around the house in summer.

The nut low is those country club boneheads who wear pleated dress pants chopped in half at the knee. Sorry, no. Shorts are a very casual look, they're athletic wear or lounge wear. Any kind of short that pretends to be dressy is going to look like a joke.

in keeping with the "the aim of shorts is to merely not look ******ed" theme, all of my shorts are just cut offs from old chinos or other trousers.

Most people who don't wear shorts all summer don't live in the south.

99/100 people (women included, especially women with their elephant legs in hot pants) have too ugly/fat/skinny/hairy/pale/whatever legs to wear shorts.
myself included, skinny and pale.
but i show respect (lol) and don't walk around half naked as soon as it gets hot.

What is the consensus on three piece suits? I just bought a grey Ralph Lauren vested suit but I'm wondering on what occasions is it appropriate to wear the vest? I have a lot of weddings coming up but dont want to overdress the groom. Most of them are wearing the standard black tux.

I wouldn't worry. A three piece suit is less formal than a tux. The former is business attire, the latter is not.

Good trousers for a three piece suit may not have belt loops, and will have attachment points for braces (suspenders) instead. The vest covers the braces and the waistband of the trousers, allowing you to remove your jacket without exposing the braces, which historically was considered gauche. Wearing a belt with a vest can result in an awkward fit as the vest may not lay smoothly over the buckle. These days, it's more a style choice of three piece vs. two piece. I'd always wear the vest with the suit, as the jacket is likely designed to look its best when accompanied by the waistcoat.
