Also i used to use the american crew paste above, this is lighter but doesn't provide quite as much hold

i like the forming cream from american crew and exclusively use it in my hair. it's a little more pliable than paste, doesn't flake like gel, has a medium hold that you can mess with throughout the day, isn't super thick or heavy and gives a matte shine. plus it smells really good.

Probably completely amateur question:

Where does one go to get soles repaired/replaced for a pair of decent shoes. They aren't amazing, but probably $150-200 dress shoes, so they are decent. Obviously I know there are cobblers etc, but i'm not sure where to go in the range of shoe repair places. For example there is a Mr Minute really close to my house that does shoe repairs, but I have no idea on the complexity of shoe repairs. Would that be adequate? Do I need a professional cobbler? Do I need to find a shop that sells these exact shoes? I really have no idea

got it this morning, it's wow nice. I was a little worried about the sleeves based on the posted measurements but it's perfect in the length department. Just dropped it off at the cleaners to get it pressed and get the cuff button fixed.

Only complaint, the ticket pocket is fake, it's just a flap sewn on, there's no actual pocket underneath, no biggie, though

Just go to any professional shoe repair guy in your area (not a dry cleaners or something). Also, certain brands have their own refurbishment programs such as Allen Edmonds and Johnston & Murphy, but they tend to be pricier than local repairs.

A local cobbler should be around $50 to just repair the sole.
A full refurbishment from AE would be around $100, but they also completely replace the cork at the bottom so it's practically like a new shoe.

I saw some interest in this thread about bespoken suits. I have had some custom clothing made in Beijing which I was indifferent to, it was nice but I had been in a rush and did not completely love it.

I was recently in Hong Kong for business and had a couple suits made for some fall weddings. I went with one of the higher end HK tailors (I will keep their name from this post, as my recommendation has already sent them a good amount of business, to no benefit to me, and I do not want to be seen as a shill). That said, my guess is that all of the 'nicer' tailors deliver a similar quality product.

The cost was 12,000 hkd (~1500 usd) per suit for the cloth I selected. Super 120 for one, and 100 for the other. One a medium grey with a subtle cross pattern and tiny blue highlights, and the other a dark blue with what is almost a tiny houndstooth pattern (but not really, I just don't know the proper names for patterns/cloths).

I went in for multiple fittings, and directed the tailors on the overall style I was looking for: notched lapels, thinnish lapels, no pleats in the pants, thin straight pants with a low rise, and a fairly closely tailored jacket that is a bit shorter than standard, and side vents.

The fittings themselves were very fast and the whole process felt a little rushed, but I think that is just the way things go. But I went in for multiple fittings and wanted to make sure I was completely happy, and they were more than accommodating.

When I went in for the final pickup of both suits, I decided I wanted them taken in a tiny bit more in the waist, and they worked it out in one day, and the suits fit perfectly.

I am very happy with the end result. The last suit I had purchased and worn was a dark Armani that had cost about $1,300 usd, which I had then paid more to have tailored properly. It was nice and fit well, but I think there is a clear difference between the fit of that suit and my new suits.

My plan for the next time I am in HK is to try out one of the cheaper options to see if I can get a nice suit made for ~700 usd, as that seems pretty likely.

That said I will be returning to this same tailor as well, to get a light-colored spring suit made and possibly another.

grey w/ pink subtle striped shirt, dark navy paul smith tie w/ silver hearts, light pink pocket square, along with these shoes

Shoulders look slightly too big but that might be the angle/lighting. I prefer a less structured shoulder as well, but overall, looks real nice.

So I'm looking at getting a suit, however I don't really need one for work, more just as something to add to my wardrobe, and to be able to wear at races/cocktail parties etc. I currently have a black suit (amateur I know, noone told me black sucks when I got it) which is passable for work, so looking to add one that is more 'casual' but can still obviously be worn in work situations should I need to. I'm on a bit of a budget at the moment, so am looking at getting something cheaper now which can be more of a backup suit with my black one for work, and spending more on my primary work/interview suit as my next purchase. Are any of these fine for those purposes?

I'm currently leaning towards the light grey for summer/races suit and then splurging on a navy suit for my next purchase as my primary business attire suit. Thoughts? I understand that navy/charcoal is what you want your primary suit combos to be, but I figure Navy/black (reasonably stylish black) is an ok combo as well.

Can any tall guys recommend brands for sweaters? Preferably a slimmer fit and in the $75-$200 range. I just tried on quite a few sweaters at Nordstrom and only found one brand (Vince?) that was both long enough and slim fitting. Just went through this same ordeal trying to find simple v-necks for summer, grrrrrrrrr.

I bought some slim fit khaki pants there like 32x34s and they were not too skinny imo. they still pretty baggy on my legs, and my legs arent super small or anything.

A small FYI for newbies such as myself regarding leather soled shoes:

Don't wear them in heavy rain (before you protect the sole with something).

This happened (not my pic, but similar damage):

A guy in this SF thread "suffered" similar damage.

They were both easy and cheap to repare though.

This is why leather soled shoes are dumb unless you put a rubber half sole on them.

I was wearing some to work one day, and it was raining out. Everyone was headed to lunch, but I was hesitant to go because I didn't want to ruin my shoes. Just stupid.

Now I just spend the $22 and put a half sole on all leather soled shoes. Maybe I should just be buying the rubber soled variants instead.

The whole point of leather shoes is the quality and look of the sleek nice sole. Add in the fact that rubber makes the shoes much less breathable will tend to make them wear out more quickly.

All rubber soles look like **** 99% of the time.

Those are great, and you can wear them with anything.

EDIT: I am confused, though -- are those Aldens or AE's? They look like Aldens, but the sole is stamped AE.

They're AEs. I bought a similar pair of aldens but they were the wrong size (alden's Barrie last is like 1/2 a size bigger than their others which is just lol dumb). Amazingly I made money on them flipping them on ebay (about $2.50 after fees etc).
