On Dr Who:

I thought I was alone on this site. Then John Cole revealed he was a fan. Then Entertainme. Then more.

So the time has come.

Let's talk Dr Who, past present and future. I mean the man has the best vehicle in the universe. The best tool. The best mind. He needs some love. I was raised on Dr Who, mother's milk, I have many old episodes, as well as new. I'm not an expert, but I'm close.

Okay, as us UKers are ahead of the world on this , I'll let the rest of you choose episodes to talk about, but here's the most pressing things...

1) Which doctors have you seen, and which do you prefer?
2) Is Matt Smith good?
3) Rose or Amy (pics welcome)?

I barely remember watching some Tom Baker episodes, aka the fourth doctor.

And Peter Davison, aka the fifth doctor:

Not enough that I would remember any plot lines. It was ages ago.

Love Christopher Eccleston, in general, the ninth doctor and the beginning of the modern series:

Because of Eccleston, it took me a long time to warm to David Tennant in the role:

Not fair to David, really. In retrospect, Tennant did an wonderful job with the doctor.

Doctor Eleven? I was pretty skeptical when I learned that not only were we getting a new doctor, but new head writer and executive producer.

I actually did a marathon viewing of the episodes out in the US last night and overall I'm pretty pleased. Matt Smith is a little ADD even for the Doctor, but I think he can handle it and Karen Gillian as Amy Pond is the best companion since Rose, who will be hard to knock out of my #1 spot.

So far the episodes aired in the US are:

The Eleventh Hour
The Beast Below
Victory of the Daleks
The Time of Angels
Flesh and Stone
The Vampires of Venice

Sadly, I'll probably often be behind on this thread because it's one of those "schedule to view with other family members" shows.

Favourite episode so far: Victory of the Daleks. I mean, spitfires vs daleks, what else would I pick?

think the Weeping Angels are probably the best bad guys since the Autons (yeah, that's going back some). We also watch this as a family and it's a particularly scary series for kiddies, so I forbid watching them close to bedtime.

They made it pretty obvious that:

Spoiler:
River Song murders the doctor at some future point in the series.

Speculation about future plot lines.

Started with Pertwee (possibly Troughton though don't recall)

Great old stuff was:
The Three Doctor
Pyramids of Mars
The Green death (we had a black and white telly back then)
so many others from the old series Autons, Ark in Space, etc etc
The original Master Roger Delgado

Not just an old fuddy, some of the new stuff is fantastic though there's too much luvvy dovey sentimental bollocks for my taste. The first weeping angels story was brilliant and the Shakespear.

Matt Smith seems fine.

Worst Doctor by miles was Colin Baker.

Have hopes for matt Smith

The earliest I remember watching when transmitted was Jon Pertwee. Like Chezlaw, I distinctly remember the Green Death and the giant maggots. I also remember the one where the dinosaurs started appearing in modern times. I think until Tennant, as a kid I liked Pertwee best, but getting older I really preferred Tom Baker. I never really Peter Davidson or Colin Baker, but thought McCoy was good, but suffered from terrible camp scripts and ideas. The McGann one was unremarkable in the extreme.

As a kid, I loved the Doctor, and avidly read a huge number of novelisations of his stories, which included stories right back from Hartnell. I also had books about his history, and could even tell you, in order, every single adventure right up to the starty of Baker's first adventure.

I think Tennant is my overall favourite now. Tennant and Rose was a terrific pair, but I have to say Amy is a terrific companion: sexy, clever, brave, daring, curious, and with a very basic humanity that informes her reasoning that complements the doctor very nicely. She works very well with Smith's doctor too, and is one of the reaons this series is working out well, I think.

I would also like to see some other protagonists/antagonists of old pop up tho. I'm thinking The Monk aka The Meddling Monk (that's really going back) and Romana, female Timelord.

I never watched the old series. Although it was televised here, I never quite caught on to the schedule, so the stories didn't quite make sense when I stumbled on them halfway through.

I caught a bit of the ninth doctor and saw the Torchwood spinoffs. David Tennant's doctor, though, hooked me on the show. Matt Smith is pretty good, and I like that he's learning as he goes along. Interesting addition to the cast in the last episode with Rory.

You mean a time lady?

I really like that they've bought Rory as a companion along as well, he's a nice addition, and I like it when there's more than one companion (it's a nice departure from companion-in-love with Doctor that's been a theme in the revived series)

Hungry Earth
Spoiler:
Really really like the two parters, keeping the suspense going for longer than a gnat's attention span is great, and the "return of the classic alien" is pretty nice. I just don't get why Rory/Amy know it'll all work out ok, since they saw themselves at the beginning of the episode. Ah well.

Speculation on future plot lines:
Spoiler:
Regarding Amy's Choice: There's been a bunch of rumours about the significance of the "birdsong" that they heard while falling asleep, in the first episode of the series he woke up from being knocked out hearing said birdsong. I'm gonna be mightily pissed off if it gets to the end of the season and "it's all just a dream" or something. And where's the crack in the universe gone? That hasn't been around since Venice, and they were making a pretty big deal out of it before.

Also, (maybe possibly nsfw)

Spoiler:

Gillan >>>> Piper, ainec

I have a Dr Who brag for you all.

I used to be in a band with the actress who plays the mother of Rose. She sang, I played bass.

True story.

I started with the Christopher Eccleson season, I think he was the 9th doctor, and I've watched all the episodes since then. I love this show. After watching that season and finding out he wasnt coming back I thought that there was basically no effing way that David Tennant would be half as good, but then after 3 or 4 episodes he grew on me and I couldnt imagine it without him. So I felt the exact same way about Matt Smith but now after 5 eps he is really good, probably not as good as Tennant but still awesome.

And lol at "Rose or Amy?" Amy>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Rose not close.

Also, weeping angels might be the scariest, best bad guys in any show in recent memory, so awesome. I'm always amazed at how much bang for buck, SFX-wise, that Doctor Who gets.

Years ago I watched some episodes when Tom Baker played Dr. Who. The length of the scarf; was it ever determined? I enjoyed what shows I saw. Also saw a few with the more dapper Peter Davison. The special effects were always sort of corny. I do seem to recall a series of episodes that dealt with gathering time crystals and overlords of the universe or something. Rather Clever, really. Not bad for being from the UK and all. Have not seen any Dr. Who in more than 20 years.

Tom Baker is my de facto favorite because the bulk of the episodes I saw were those, I remember this quote: "answers are easy, its asking the right questions which is hard"

If you guys haven't seen anything but the old series, you should gve the modern version a try. It's on Netflix watch instantly. There's still some cheesiness when it comes to villains, but the characters are worth it.

Big fan of the show (haven't seen any of the old stuff). Rose Tyler is one of my favorite characters ever, so whoever this Amy chick is she's probably not better.

I find the Daleks really, really annoying, though. Just can't take them seriously at all.

1) I've been a huge open doctor who fan for a while on this forum everyone ingnores when I mention it.

Matt Smith is A+
Amy Pond is A+

But since the rehash

Every single companion has rocked in their own way I love the Donna Noble storyline Dr. Donna

And all 3 doctors since the rehash have rocked.

Daleks rock EXXXXTEEERRRMMMIINNAAATE.

I'm actually a HUGE CAPTAIN JACK HARKNESS FAN. Torchwood is an ok show but the character Captain Jack being almost immortal is awesome.

Best episode was in season 1 rehash with the Robotic Weakest Link where people who get voted off get vaporized

DON' BLINK....don't even blink.

I thought Eccelson was irreplacable when tennant took over......I was wrong..... I thought tennant was irreplaceable when smith took over...I was wrong...

I do love Barty Crouch Jr. though always have a place in my heart for him

Lol just watch a clip of the Tom Baker doctor losing to K-9 in chess.

The adventures of Sarah Jane Smith is a good TV show for kids and Diehard fans...just needs MORE K-MISTRESSS.

anyone catch troughtons picture on the library card in the vampire episode

as a kid I obsessed with watching the episodes on PBS - had to stay up late and get it from Spokane and not always possible -

I should probably watch the reboot - but I'd kill for some more of the old seasons - if they were ALL released, I'd probably just start watching from season one

I had the Dr. Who roleplaying game as a kid - I was such an obsessed geek I mapped out my own TARDIS like a Dungeons and Dragons map on graph paper - was 9 sheets taped together in a 3x3 foldout - and lots of doors were one-way - (A Tardis door could open to a room, but you close and when you re-open, it's a different room, kinda like that scene in the Matrix)

if for no other reason then Billie Piper I should definately reboot

I guess my favorite was the 5th doctor but the way the rule goes (like James Bond) - you generally like the first one you started watching the most

Sadly some of the early ones are gone forever. The BBC used to reuse the tapes, there was a good reason for it (as Douglas Adams might say).

There's some Hartnell and a fair bit of Troughton available. I think its complete from Pertwee.

I saw the episode about Vincent Van Gogh this morning. Just terrific. Some beautiful shots, a beautiful tribute to Van Gogh, and just perfectly written. I didn't think I'd see an episode to beat spitfired vs daleks, but this one did. I am a week behind, so you Americans should be getting this imminently, I'd guess. Do not miss it.

probably from Eccleston onwards. Failing that, the Christmas Invasion, which introduced Tennant. You don't want to miss the Tennant/Rose season.
