Agree! They've definitely got much of the same slow, dreamy and surreal vibe to almost all their songs.

Cohen was probably the best songwriter this world has seen and his songs have had lot of really good and (even more) bad covers.

Hallelujah is undoubtedly his most abused song in that it's been covered endlessly by bad/mediocre artist trying to cash in on a song that almost can't be done badly (though god knows they've tried and way too many have succeeded).

But screw those guys - let's focus on someone who actually did it justice:

Listening to Cohen today and the lyric that always strikes me:

"You told me again you preferred handsome men

But for me you would make an exception."

Who are your top five?
Who are your top five bassists?

Monk is also in the top five rhythmic sound-maker list, let me ponder the rest but they're likely percussionists (i consider bass and piano to be percussion).

as for bass across all genres, in no particular order except the first, this is what came to mind but i'm sure once i think on it things will change
Ron Carter
Claypool
Jaco
Geddy
Mingus

I could never answer my own question. The first super star bassist I was aware of was Jack Bruce. Then came Bootsie Collins. Of those current now, I always want to listen to Victor Wooten and Claypool. Ron Carter would top any list if I were sure he was an Earthling. Seriously, he's in a world by himself.

Carole Kaye and James Jamerson if only for the staying power and the imprint of their thick calloused fingerprints all over modern music.
Wilton Felder as arrow obliogatorily identified in a different thread
Larry Graham
Lesh Filling, Bass Great
Geezer and Wyman
and it's hard to ignore Aston Barrett

it's shaping up to be a top twenty-five list with rotating names depending on the algorithms.

A few years ago while I was visiting cousins in California, my cousin Linda was telling me that her nephew plays in a band. She said that she and my other cousin Patty, who were both in their 60s then, took my 85 year old uncle to see the band. I figured they went to some local bar in Orange County since I had never heard of the band. Anyway, here's a cover by the band:

Yeah. I was going to comment on that, but decided against it. It's obvious to me that I am not knowledgeable enough to know what is "right," so why should I admire his escapes.

When I was a kid in high school I was listening to Paul Butterfield playing backup for Mike Bloomfield. On Bar 9, the band returned to the root, but Butterfield returned to the dominant 7th.

Clank!

But it sounded great!

I thought, "What a lucky guy. He misses his note, but for some unknown reason, it sounds even better."

It took ~30 years before I figured that one out. If I figure Monk out in 25, it will be progress.
