here is one that came quickly back to haunt one

"we cant have the inmates running the prison".

A better less offensive version of that I always liked is the crazies running the asylum.

It's only less offensive if you're considering the probability of a crazy person reading it compared to the probability of a convict reading it, or if you're discounting the feelings of crazy people.

"fake it till you make it"

recipe for disaster imo.

Apparently 'empty barrels make the most noise' is now racist.

"A man is only worth his word."

Aside from the obvious sexism, I'd have to downgrade my thinking of 99% of the men I've met.

Yeah, like Kevin Spacey

I was haggling over the price of a tshirt on the roadside stand and the lady told me that I was trying to Jew her down. Didnt offend me but was surprised that she said it.

where i grew up that saying was used all the time. so much that it wasnt thought of as distasteful just as an expression. except to the jewish people i guess.

p.c. is so much more pronounced nowadays you have to be so careful what you say.

"You never regret the things you do, you only regret the things you don't do".

1. This is false, I've done plenty of things I regret, and am glad I decided not to do plenty of other things.

2. Often used as a blanket justification by someone who is trying to talk themselves into doing something dumb/self-defeating.

Yeah, it's a damn shame that you'd get chastised for using an anti-Semitic slur these days. Don't you just hate political correctness?

Let's call a spade a spade
Sold down the river(Origin was slavery)
Long time no see or No can do(Origin was making fun of how indians talk)
Rule of thumb(Origin was from domestic violence)

Probably not a cliche yet, but I did say something like 'those guys are getting too Weinstein' when I witnessed some guys being entitled jerks.

Two I have always lived by: "Look before you leap," and, "He who hesitates is lost!"

But my all time favorite: "It's the exception that proves the rule."

This is one of the most annoying phrases I hear on a regular basis. "To be honest...." "Honestly...." So stupid.

"Have your cake and eat it too"

Never made sense to me? If I have cake you can bet your ass I'm eating it.

After you eat the cake, you will not have your cake anymore. The only way to still have your cake is to not eat it. That's what the saying is alluding to.
