Wow, I only ever read 2 threads on 2+2 (MattMoore and yours) and I hope this is representative of what I can read on 2+2!!!!

I bought your book this week, looking forward to get all the details on your story.

hydro,

I don't know who you are but excellent first post.

99,

Beer and my book; you are a woman of excellent tastes.

SC,

You are too kind. However, I will only be satisfied when I sell 1 million copies, (said with Dr Evil voice).

Overall I like the story but I think you could have cut down on the words a little.

Your story reminds of Hemingway and maybe I was expecting the same minimal writing style for some odd reason.

And you should have had more sex.

I'm only half way through though.

FWIW, no matter how many copies you sell, I'm sure this will all have been a worthwhile endeavor.

I sold enough copies of my book to make a little (very little) money, but the experience of writing, editing, and publishing it was invaluable. And it led pretty directly to me getting an incredible job.
is there a digital copy of your book?

fuluck,

Funny you should say that. The first few drafts I wrote in a very Hemingway-esque style, but my editor thought it was too formal and convinced me to go back to a conversational style. Looking at the result he was right.

As far as not enough sex, dude; that's been the complaint of my entire life.

Book news for you all:

Sales still ticking along. This morning was pretty awesome though. I woke up to see a bulk order of 16 of my books. It's my first order from a bookshop. Pretty damn stoked to tell the truth.

Also, we're getting the audio version done now and it will be ready for Xmas.

Sweet! I go through a ton of audiobooks during my commute. I'd love to have the audioversion as well as the kindle one.

Will it be on Audible?

Who'll be narrating it?

A controversial choice, (controversy means publicity, yeah baby!)

I'll announce it soon so as to stir up people's gimmies.

Just finished the book. I've been waiting since I found the thread in late 2013 and it did not disappoint. I'll review on Amazon and will definitely be purchasing a few more as gifts around the holidays.

Wow, I thought I had read all the relevant 2p2 mammoth threads but somehow I'd never come across this until it popped up on twitter a couple of days ago. Read the whole thing in one sitting, amazing read and I'm so glad you made it into a book in the end. Definitely going to order one once my credit card finds it way to this god-forsaken island. As someone who's been struggling with publishers for a while now and strongly considering going to self-publishing route for his book, also spawned by a 2p2 thread, I'd be very curious to read a post about how the experience was for you, if you ever find time to write one.

Anyway, best of luck with your book and thanks for sharing your experiences! Really makes me want to go to Uganda, too.

See, this sort of thing just makes my day.

Don't forget to post a review!

And to all those who were intending to orders copies as gifts for Xmas, this is your friendly reminder.

So a bit of an update for how the book went in the four months it was out in 2015. I sold just under 400 copies, which is pretty good considering that I didn't go with a major publisher. And I also discovered that the average sell for any non-fiction work is 250 copies. So pretty pleased with that. A huge thanks to everyone here, but particularly Yeti for helping me adjust some of this thread where necessary.

And over at pushingrubberdownhill.com I have a post up about the next book. Hoping to have it out around September which would be a year after the first release.

This is awesome. I check 2+2 for a couple hours maybe 2-3 times a year since Black Friday ended my serious poker-playing days, and fortunately this time around I checked my subscribed threads and clicked through to see the book is now out.

I read this as a high school senior when you first started sharing, which was fortuitous timing and it definitely made an impact on me - I ended taking a few less-safe/obvious turns in my life that have made an enormous difference. This thread and de captain's thread about sailing around the world are probably the two most impactful things I read here as a kid coming of age. I'm ordering the book now and will probably be in your neck of the woods sometime in the next couple years. I'll definitely PM you then to see if I can't buy you a beer and maybe even get out on the water with your guys.

Today was kind of an epiphany for me. I finally realised something important. I've written about it over on my blog but I wanted to post the relevant bit for you guys here.

"... But here is the ironic thing. Since I was a boy my dream was to be a published writer with people buying my books. And because of that thread on 2+2, I have achieved that dream. So while I wrote the thread to help other people change their lives, in reality, it ended up changing mine.

I think that's pretty darn cool ..."

To all of you, a humble thanks. I know that I wrote it on the inside page of the book, but I really understand it now. You guys are the best. Life can be pretty cool when you put yourself out there.
