Had this in my library to read for while, just not something I ever felt in to mood to get into it.
I saw the new TV show that's based on it has just started and is getting decent reviews.

Yeah what’s funny is I had it on my shelf for a long time also. Finished a bunch of audiobooks and tried to DL this one, and there was like a 7 week waiting list at the library which I was like wtf. Then wife told me about the show. The episode descriptions I’ve seen have been more focused on the murders and less on Mormonism, where I really enjoyed the 2/3 of the book that told the history of Mormonism and the various sects, characters, etc. But I haven’t seen any of the show yet.

I don’t think that I will ever read “The lord of the rings” , if I wish to be bored shitless I have always got Shakespeare’s comedies.

Costa Nosta, by John Dickie. Emphasis on the Sicilian Mafia.

There are probably other good reads on other Mafia outfits. In Italy and the US.

Brief Answers to the Big Questions by Stephen Hawking. Not physics in this one, but more his thoughts on a few questions like "Is there a God?"

As always, he lays out his arguments for his case in a way that's accessible to laymen. Good read, interesting.

For rbk, not sure if you mean fiction or non. Here's a few from both

The Godfather, Mario Puzo
Wiseguy, Nicholas Pileggi - basis for Goodfellas ofc.
The Big Heist, Anthony M DiStafno -- ok, probably not as good as above

The Gold Coast by Nelson DeMille. I mean it's not literary or anything, and not deadly serious, but it sneaks in the evil nature of everyday mobsters in a clever entertaining way imo.

edit: oh you said non-fiction, never mind

Man I went thru his whole catalog awhile back - like in my early 20s. Enjoyed some of those books. Maybe I’ll download one for a flight to Europe.

I did too. I think I bought Cathedral off a paperback rack at the grocery store in the early 90s, then sought out The Gold Coast and The General's Daughter which I think are his 2 best. Also liked Charm School and Plum Island. I think he lost me after that, his books seemed like they got considerably longer and less fun for me.

Have definitely read all of them and knowing St Patrick’s makes Cathedral all the more interesting. But other than a modest amt of Cathedral I don’t recall anything about any of them. I really liked The Lion’s Game though. I remember that.

The Last Unicorn by Peter S. Beagle.

The title and plot did not immediately grab my attention but I had only heard great things about the story and the author so I gave it a shot and I'm glad I did. It's incredibly well written and an amazing take on fairy tales.

I'll be reading all his books eventually if they are half as good as this.

Just finishing Argo, by Antonio Mendez and Matt Baglio.

Even though I saw the movie back then and know what's going to happen, this book is pretty good reading--a page-turner.

I assume the book is more true-to-life about some of the differences (or maybe I remember the movie incorrectly). Nothing major, just the usual Hollywooding on the movie side. While not revealing any secrets, he does talk generally about some of the techniques that spies use to do different things, that was pretty interesting too.

btw, this was very good. It would mean much more to someone who was in the Bay Area punk scene, which I wasn't, but it was still enjoyable. It turns out that there is not only Political Correctness, there is Punk Correctness.

I just finished The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson, really good. Evidently it's hard to make sense out of an evil old house when you're batshit crazy yourself. I read her We Have Always Lived in the Castle awhile back and that's great too. Shame she died so young and didn't write more, total original.

Feeling festive, so read Twas the Nightshift before Christmas by former doctor turned writer and comedian Adam Kay.

Short book telling stories of his multiple times working the Xmas shifts in obstetrics and gynaecology. Very, very funny.
