Books: What are you reading tonight? Books: What are you reading tonight?

I'm reading The Best American Travel Writing of 2000.

Apparently, this is or was an annual book (I also found the 2006 version).

Surprisingly, it's not about travel in America, but rather, travel writing by American writers. Pretty interesting, some of the stories have been from Cuba, Australia, Nantucket, Africa.

I shall recalibrate my sarcasm detector. Obviously, it malfunctioned.

to be fair, it's harder to tell it's a joke when it's not even remotely funny

It's actually pretty funny. You were baiting the bible thumpers and landed an atheist instead.

I wanted to come up with something about Jebus not being the author, but just the lead. That's kind of where it died.

Fill in your joke here.

Agatha Christie.

Coincidence?

Just finished 'The Road' and I found it a surprisingly quick and easy read, certainly in comparison to 'Blood Meridian'

Both Jesus and Muhammad were illiterate as were most of their followers, at the time.

The only religion that isn’t a cosmic joke is Taoism; which is, in its simplest form, hardly a traditional religion at all.

Yes. Is the current Queen of the UK, Elizabeth II, God’s Emissary on earth?

"The Tao that can be named is not the eternal Tao" is probably the most cogent thing ever written about religion.

Opinion is the barren flower of the Way, the beginning of ignorance.

Those who say don't know, those who know don't say.

I found Zealot by Reza Aslan helpful in clearing up questions about Jesus though the author is a filthy infidel

Jesus was/is, by definition, all-knowing. Take your blasphemy elsewhere, charlatan!

I think he invented the post-modern cliche of:

Spoiler:
the author putting himself INSIDE the book as a real person not just a character, see London Fields by Amis for more details, ad infinitum

Just re-watched the film, which made me feel like I almost owe it to myself to read the book now.

The road is basically a screen play

Blood meridian is one of the few books I had the spark notes with me. After finishing a chapter I would read the spark notes so I knew what actually happened that chapter.

Harold Bloom wrote an interesting essay on Blood Meridian -- I think it's in his Shakespeare book. He identifies The Judge as as the god of war and equates him with Othello. Worth a read imo

I also see Russel Crowe's performance in the remake of 3:10 to Yuma along the same lines. Havoc for the sake of pure havoc.

I've had the film saved on my planner for a few months now. I was waiting till I got around to reading the book before watching it. I might check it out this weekend.

I'm still not quite sure what to make of Blood Meridian. I read it a couple of years ago and I can honestly say that when reading it I could 'feel' it like almost no other book I'd read. It just seemed to affect my mood as it was so dark, oppressive and unrelenting (at least to me it was). For all that though I'm not sure where I'd rank it in regards to all the books I've read, I'm still genuinely unsure about it.
I'd put off reading The Road as I thought I was in for something similar but it was a walk in the park in comparison.
