I've read Malazan and not sure about a reread. I do think I could appreciate some things more and hopefully remember the characters better. But it is a massive amount of reading and tough to want to do it when I can read new stuff.

I'm nearing the end of Black Company. Definitely not as epic as Malazan but less filler or just less of it is nice. The high points in Malazan are very, very good though and some of the characters are amazing. Hmmm, starting to think I really should read it again. Lol

Highly recommend go ogling malazan reread of the Fallen if you're going to read the books. Made the experience far more enjoyable for me.

Remains of the Day was pretty fantastic. I'm having trouble picturing how it would make a decent film so I'm very curious to check it out.

Happy to report that the film is a lot better than decent.

I read three Ishiguro these past couple years.

Never Let Me Go > Remains of the Day > The Buried Giant

The first is one of my favorite novels, the second is elite, and the third is alright. I can't wait to read some more of his work.

I see that it did well at the Academy Awards and has a stellar cast. Still don't see how the story lends itself to the big screen, so it should be interesting. Looking forward to it.

I liked the Buried Giant more than Remains of the Day, but that's largely because I'm a sucker for anything Arthurian. I also read When We Were Orphans but wouldn't recommend it. Nocturnes is on my list to read, but I've got a way to go.

Is it that one where they don't come close to finishing? Link?

Loved Remains of the Day and the movie was great too. I've seen the moveie Never Let Me Go and though it was okay, worth reading the book anyway?

I read An Artist Of The Floating World and was distinctly unimpressed, but reading a lot of coverage & some interviews this year has made me keen to go back and try some of his more core books.

I wasn't a big fan of the movie Never Let Me Go, and found the book far more enjoyable. If you thought the movie was decent and you enjoy the author I'd say go for it, it's not that long anyways.

Oh snap! Ok, I'm much more likely now you reread. Haven't read all ICE yet. Can't remember most of the ones I did read very well lol.

I haven't read any of ICE's yet, or the prequels. I'm sure they'd be fun but I needed a long break after finishing.

Finally, after all these years, I got around to reading Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe.

It's hard to do it justice here, but the evocation of 19th century West African life before and after the first appearance of missionaries is remarkable and affecting.

One of the best books I've ever read.

I’ve been reading Boris Akunin’s novels - crime drama set in nineteenth century Moscow. Sort of Sherlock Holmes feel to it, but more knock about. Fun stuff.

I've heard this from several sources. Definitely putting it on my list for this year.

One of the alltime great classics, I've repped it here previously a few times.

Currently reading Timothy Hallinan's Bangkok mysteries, first two were fun.

Recently read When We Were Orphans, quite liked it. Maybe not quite up to Remains of the Day standard though.

Might as well put it out there - going to have to finally finish Europe Central in 2018.

Never Let Me Go is awesome, go read it now.

I read The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time by Mark Haddon. It's a detective novel written from the point of view of a mentally handicapped teenager who tries to find the killer of his neighbor's dog. Solid book but as good as the perspective is, the narrator can be a touch annoying.

I liked Charles Stross' cyberpunk novel Accelerando. Guy's got tons of fantastic ideas and he implements them well, but he can't draw a character to save his life. Interested to read some of his other stuff.

And I finished Yuval Noah Harari's **** Deus. Loved his book Sapiens, and even though this one is very good and contains his usual keen insights, it didn't rock my world the way Sapiens did. This one focuses more one the future and where humanity might end up, with an emphasis on Humanism and technology.

Abaddon's Gate (#3 of Expanse)

Some stuff I disliked first:

Spoiler:
There were some odd choices for new characters. The large amounts of religious stuff seemed out of place to me. The Mormon's millennial ship made sense, but the large amount of religious people (especially among the OPA) seems out of place. If Clarissa goes on a redemption arc, or really if anything happens to her other than a trial and execution/imprisonment I'm going to be upset. Unfortunately it seems like the books are heading that way because they constantly mention her guilt over killing Ren, and then gloss over the fact she blew up an entire ship's worth of people.

The book seems like it was rushed to get out. There were several misspellings in my edition, and also it seemed like the authors changed their mind about the power of the station or whatever. There were several mentions of how guns would not work where they were. This was a huge plot point for a long time and then all of a sudden Serge gets shot in the face and there's constant fire fights.

There were a lot of times when I said "Oh no please don't do that..." and it then it happened every time.

Rocinante escaping the missile by going into the ring. The pacifist preacher venturing into space, and then attacking (and besting) a trained killer... etc etc. A bunch of cliche and far fetched plot points.

And there were far more cliche, and overly convenient, things done to move the plot along. It bothered me a bit, but I can understand why they chose to include these plot points because these conveniences allowed the book to move along at a ridiculously fast pace. Once things get going it was hard to put the book down and the pace never let up. Overall I enjoyed it a lot despite rolling my eyes a few time.

Check out Randall Carlson. They were both on Joe Rogans podcast multiple times. Check those out as well.

I'm reading the "Secret Agent of Terra" by John Brunner I absolutely loving this short book. It is science fiction with a twist. Really enjoyable plot forcing the characters in some strange situations. Awesome.

I was at the library today and picked up The Lovely Bones off the cheapo bookshelf sale for a dollar. Good value, like-new hardback in a sleek powder blue. I think I remember hearing some vaguely good things about this as bestsellers go, and I'm liking it alright. A little scifi, a little grisly, maybe a little too little-girl emo for a man's man like myself but I'm entertained. Rooting for the bad guy! haha jk
