I rather like this idea of a group read.

May I suggest that we (1.) appoint someone to nominate three books for a poll that will allow the Lounge to (2.) vote on which of the three choices we want to begin with?

Might I also suggest that to begin with, our Book Czar choose three books that most of the Lounge would consider to be classics of either the 19th or 20th Centuries, whether literature, detective, adventure, cowboy (why not?) or science fiction? Later, we can allow the next Czar to bring up a more contemporary list?

May I place in nomination the esteemed NadjorfDefense as the Lounge's first Book Czar and give him until March 1st to put forth a poll of his three selections and that the Lounge can chew on these in discussion for at least a week before the final votes are tallied?

Miss Loneyhearts is terrific.
That school sounds AWESOME

Very much like my school, but free. BGA didn't cost anywhere close to what private schools do now (cost less than in state tuition for our 3rd rate public university); but it still cost money. So the demographics didn't inlude those who would've benefited from it most.

Only options were which language we took (but French, Spanish, or Latin was required) and whether or not we took hard science classes (chemistry and physics were not required but biology and earth science was). Drama and Computer Science were available as electives.

Required:
4 years English
4 years History
3 years Foreign Language
2 years Science
4 years Math
1 year Art
1 year Speech

I know the school's cost has ****ing gone through the roof (swanky new campus) and I'll bet the curriculu has been all tarted up too.

Blood meridian is gorgeous, except for like 5% of it. The writing just becomes bad in places. Probably the greatest book in terms of language I've read.

I quit about 45 pages in because I was going through a rough patch and honestly thought Blood Meridian would make me hate humanity even more than I already did.

I don't think foreign language should be required in US high school. Teach more math or mandate psychology or have a meditation slot IMO.

Im great with nadjorf being book czar
but i dont like idea of.limiting what the book might be.

Why force it to be something old or complex? Imo a book that is easily accessible might not only work for participants itt, but it might attract some nonreaders. Im all for a classic or challenging book as well; just sayin i dont agree that it HAS to be one

While I don't read much these days, I used to read a lot, and I lurk in this thread daily. I really enjoy some of the discussion here, especially involving those posters that don't really post elsewhere in the Lounge.

I started a thread about these larger 'what are you <fill in> tonight', mostly inspired by this thread, to maybe get the Lounge talking about these kinds of large threads, and whether we should encourage longer posts about books (and movies) to be their own thread, and that kind of thing

http://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/63...-talk-1302770/

I'd really be interested to hear some feedback, and I see such discussion as a wholly positive thing, and helping to keep this forum an interesting place for talking about stuff both in a casual way and a detailed way, whichever takes your mood.

NadjorfDefense

Fourthed (or is it Fifthed?)

I think ND should just be allowed to choose whatever books he wants. After all, he is the one who is going to have to keep the discussion moving when it lulls so it should be books that he's really interested in reading and discussing.

It would seem that my suggestion that we revive a Lounge book read has personally offended the territoriality of some habitual Loungers. See Threadzillas.

Therefore, I retract my suggestion for a Lounge book read and a Book Czar and apologize to NadjorfDefense for putting him on the spot and causing him any embarrassment.

I will not comment on this again.
