On that note, BEE tweeted recently that he just finished reading through the screenplay for Glamorama ... so I guess that is happening at some point

I liked 'Blink,' because it was about anecdotes that made sense in the theme of the book. Only so many people are going to be expert on ancient Greek sculptures, for instance.

Tipping Point and Outliers get progressively more annoying as he tries to make a 'larger picture' out of a tiny set of data points. For every one 'positive' there are 1000s of negatives that go mostly unremarked. Too many 'just-so' stories for my taste.

I really liked hearing him speak live, and prefer his magazine articles. 'How David Beats Goliath' was great among others.

Don't read them myself, but I do read a lot of reviews.

Shaun Ryder's recent biography is meant to be great. I remember people going on about a biog of Motley Crue (even without any interest in the band).

Keith Richards autobiog is obviously massive but got very mixed love it or hate it reviews.

Chronicles by Bob Dylan is amazing, although very different from scar tissue and the dirt.

One of my reading buddies is very high on Neil Peart's Ghost Rider.

He recommends it very strongly (along with the Keith Richards book).

Why did Dylan write a book called "Volume 1" 6 years ago and we never heard from him again? Weird.

Never heard from him again?

Anyway, he supposedly started writing vol 2 this summer so hopefully it will see the light of day sometime.

+1 on Keith Richards' bio. It's even better if you play guitar.

I liked it a lot, but I'm big into music and rock bands, esp. I've read bios of Pink Floyd, Zeppelin, Doors (best one so far), Nirvana, Motley Crue, etc., so I'm biased. If rocks bands are not your thing, then maybe not. The trash-talking Richards does might make it worth it, though.

hmmmm ok that might be my next book.

its funny but scar tissue is basically a bret easton ellis book. nothing really exciting happens yet the prose is inexplicably magnetic and it makes for a good long read

sex, drugs, breakups. over and over

if kiedis didn't constantly inject his personality into this, i'd be long done of it

Is it just me or is Keidis a little obsessed with menstration in his music?

Finishing The Corner by David Simon tonight. Not as good as Homicide, but still very good. Seasons 3 and 4 of The Wire are pretty much lifted from this book. Highly recommended although depressing.

Spooky coincidence. While I was dropping in to check the thread, I was also loading up The Wire, thinking I would watch all the commentaries in order (seeing that I've already watched the series at least three times), and also thinking I should really check out David Simon's books. And all this happened literally between the time the page was loading and the time I scrolled down to your post.

On another note, you'd probably love Clockers, by Richard Price. One of my favorite books. I bought it because it had the feel of The Wire, having no idea that it was actually a major inspiration for the show, and also that Richard Price wound up writing for the show. Imagine my surprise when I stumbled across scenes written in 1990(ish) that were used word for word in The Wire.

Haha I watched all of David's commentaries over the last two weeks! If you like them the book is a lock.

Will check out clockers.

Starting on Julian Barnes' Booker Prize winner, The Sense of an Ending. I've read a number of his novels, and he's one of the truly interesting writers working today. His Flaubert's Parrot is one of my all time favorites.

It's also the second book I'll have read with the same title. The first, by Frank Kermode, is also terrific, though a bit specialized.

Is this the same Clockers that Spike Lee made into a movie?
