Nope, but it's not a difficult book to read anyway. Easily his best book imho.

I'm finally reading Sam Harris' masterwork, The End of Faith: Religion, Terror and the Future of Reason. I'm about half-way through and I'm astonished at the breadth and scope of this book. It's not only a refutation of all religion, it's a study of why we think the way we do, the physiology of the brain, and what the human race will have to do if it's going to survive the next hundred years without killing itself off over which book was actually written by the Creator of the Universe, and which was not.

Great book, and I'd love to discuss it with others of you who have read it.

I never finished that book, I was tired when I reached chapter 4 (the one on Islam) and I was starting a new path in my life (starting grad school), so I forgot about the book for a while, never went back to finishing the book, but I did read "Letter to a Christian Nation" and reading Sam Harris got me to read some Bertrand Russell. The essay of Russell on "What I Believe" and his essay of "Why I am not a Christian" were amazing.

I agree that Harris writes about some very interesting things. I was looking forward to his next chapters, I think I should go back and read "End of Faith", although I would probably have to start from the beginning to get the feel of the book again.

The Joke's Over by Ralph Steadman

he's the guy who illustrated Hunter S' work over his career......not far into it, but it's got the flow of a HST work so far so i'm pleased so far.

Nice, AJ. The Brits aren't uptight about comma splices either.

I'm still reading it right now. I find it funny, but not funny enough to keep going back to it with constant frequency.

Do math books count? I am now reading "Algebraic Number Theory" by Ian Stewart and David Tall. It is a much nicer read than a normal math book while explaining difficult concepts.

Finished 'City of God' a bit back. I really enjoyed it. Much bloodier than the movie but the side stories really gave more of a 'ghetto feel' to the story (if that makes sense). For those not familiar to the book/movie, its a fictional story based off the slums in Rio de Janiero. Kids and gangs rule and those kids are crazy brutal. Great read and I highly recommend.

About to start either a Tom Clancy book (Red storm rising) or 'Life of Pi'. Two different spectrums but both are books that I've been wanted to read for a while. Any of you guys read either?

I just finished "The Dark Half" by Stephen King. I would give it a 6.5 compared to his other work, an 8 compared to most similar books (mass market horror/ low thought fiction)

Books by him I liked it more then....

Salem's Lot
Gerald's Game
Insomnia
IT
Thinner
The Tailsman
The Running Man

Was not as good as:
The Stand
The Shinning
Misery
Pet Sematary
Bag of Bones
The Long Walk

Tied with the Dead Zone

I'm probably gonna start "The Road" tomorrow.

Also on Deck are:

"House of Leaves"
"Dogrun" by Arthur Nersesian (Really liked "The F--- Up")
"Island" - Huxley
"Leaving Disneyland" by Alexander Parsons
"The Family" - Puzo
All King books not listed above outside of the last few (The Cell, and that other one that I think was a love story)

When I finish that my unborn child will let me know what she's reading in her college Lit classes.

Ken

Algebraic number theory is one of the things an aspiring number theorist has to learn.

Just finished The Road by Cormac McCarthy. It was a really fast (too fast) read and it blew me away. I have a young son so that probably contributed to the emotional impact. His use of dialog and spare punctuation gave the prose a poetic feel. I was also listening to Radiohead's Kid A a lot (not during reading sessions) and it made the perfect mental soundtrack when I was reading the book.

Other than The Road, I've only read No Country For Old Men. Which one of McCarthy's other books should I read next? Are there any to avoid?

I know some people that love "Blood Meridian". I haven't read it myself, but it has been recommended to me several times and it is in my "to read soon" bookshelf.

In the last couple of days I've finished Gates of Fire: An Epic Novel of the Battle of Thermopylae, The Long Tail: Why the Future of Business is Selling Less of More, and The New New Thing: A Silicon Valley Story. I'm about to start on Prophet of Innovation, about Joseph Schumpeter whose most lasting legacy to economic thought was most likely creative destruction.

I didn't see you list Stephen King's self-described "magnum opus", the Dark Tower series. The books in this series are connected to alot of King's other works.

Get the hardcover illustrated editions.

I am going to attempt to read some of What is the What this evening. It will be difficult for me because I'm tired. I need to read a lot and fast.

The Cross series is definetly Pattersons best work and this is a decent addition to the series. Really looking forward to the next book in this series. I read this book on a 5 hour plane flight couldn't put it down.

Read Red Storm Rising when it first came out and remember it as being one of Clancy's best. It's a very complicated WWIII scenario with many plot lines...and it's unlike many of his other books. Very good, though.

Just finished "Sanctuary" by William Faulkner. Not bad but I didn't like it as much of some of his other stuff. A little too much overwrought description in certain places, imo. Overall an decent read (some parts are very well done and the characters are interesting) but not really my thing I guess.

I am about a quarter of the way into "The Life & Times of Michael K" by J.M. Coetzee. Wasn't sure what to expect but I quite like it so far. For the unfamiliar, it's the story of a slow, hair-lipped South-African man who attempts to relocate his mother from the city to the country. Apparently it won a few awards here and there.

I read The Road and Blood Meridian within the last couple of weeks. Blood Meridian is fantastic, but a much tougher read than The Road. I highly recommend it. I plan to read the Border Trilogy very soon.

I've heard the Gates of Fire was really good. What did you think of it?
