here are some names from the Tidewater and/or DC area or Piedmont area that I plan to look up soon:

John Jackson
Snooky Pryor
Henry Townsend
Homesick James
Phil Wiggins
John Cephas
Warner Williams
Blind Boy Fuller
Blind Willie McTell
Reverend Gary Davis
Sonny Terry
Elizabeth Cotten (Freight Train Blues)
Etta Baker

it's sometimes called Tidewater Blues but I believe it's more often referred to as Piedmont blues -

The Piedmont region is the hilly area which lies between the Atlantic Coastal Plain and the Appalachian Mountains from central Georgia to central Virginia.

...........................

what's very interesting to me about this recording from Henry Townsend is that it predates Robert Johnson whose famous recordings were made in 1936 and 1937

Robert Johnson, of course, is a national icon - there is a postage stamp honoring his memory

this guy, whose music is very similar to Robert Johnson's, is virtually unknown

If you add the Piedmont, you have your life's work before you.

I don't think this has been posted before. Little Walter and Hound Dog Taylor. I don't think I've ever seen Mr. Taylor play in such a subdued manner.

That is so good.

I like this comment.

Little Walter never takes a break or breather here.
He just plays and plays. He keeps going and going, like the Energizer Bunny.

Skip James is one of my favorites. I've heard that Alan Wilson's singing style was an attempt to emulate him.

thanks for sharing that. i'm pretty sure that's Garry Burnside (R.L.'s son) playing bass.

Junior recorded on Fat Possum (the same label as R.L.) and their families collaborated quite a bit.

such a unique sound for hill country blues.

Though he avoided the limelight, his influence as a musical artist has been widely acknowledged by figures such as Mark Knopfler, Neil Young and Eric Clapton, who described him as "one of the most important artists in the history of rock". He is considered to be one of the originators of the Tulsa Sound, a loose genre drawing on blues, rockabilly, country, and jazz."
