Going with true vocal talent. Not a singer or a broadcaster.

Rather, he's a human soundboard.

He is

Spoiler:
Michael Winslow

Here he is performing "Whole Lotta Love" by Led Zeppelin

Perhaps the most distinctive voice in American music today, and this is perhaps the saddest song I know:

And this one comes damn close:

And here's a singer who's not afraid to do all sorts of standards, and deep in my heart of hearts I pretend she's singing directly to me:

Well, it's getting near dawn...

Spoiler:

The Voice:

Bobby McFerrin

Dragged to one of his concerts before the ubiquitous "Don't Worry" broke, this is the song that blew me away...

And it's on Dom

Round 5 Pick:

The lead singer of one of my favorite bands:

Spoiler:
Beth Gibbons

Portishead is about as distinctive of a band as has ever existed. And Beth Gibbons voice is certainly one of the many reasons why.

If she only ever sang that song above, I'd choose her for this draft. One of my all-time favorite vocal performances. But there are obviously more:

Dom's Picks:

TOM JONES
BON SCOTT
ALLISON KRAUSS
SADE
BETH GIBBONS

Love the Hollies trio pick.

Guys, make sure you fill out the spreadsheet - and at the beginning of each pick - make sure you say what round it is.

John should have pick Diana Krull's song - Peel Me a Grape. Sends the tallywhacker into orbit.

On that note for my fifth round pick, I'm going modern gal also: Norah Jones. One song will be enough to set the sultry fire burning.

Well, maybe two; once is not enough:

For number six I was going to pick myself, Zeno - The Voice of God. But then I became humble and decided to keep an even keel to the draft. Sex...... oh, excuse me; I mean Six is upcoming soon.

Have to say, I'm partly + pleasantly surprised at how this draft is going.

For my sixth round pick - A man who should not need an introduction but I’ll give one anyway. He is a Blues Legend that defines description in every possible way. He puts a spell on everyone and anyone that has the gumption to listened to him. No one compares to the incomparable Screamin' Jay Hawkins. Bow down and pay homage before the Lord of All Singers: Male or Female or those that can’t decide.

Picks so far:

Howlin Wolf
Mae West
Keith Jackson
Koko Taylor
Norah Jones
Screamin Jay Hawkins

Round 6:

My next pick may not be familiar for a lot of you, but hopefully you'll be as gob-smacked as I was when I first heard this artist back in the 80s.

Spoiler:
Paul Buchanan

Buchanan fronted 80's Brit outfit The Blue Nile through four wonderful albums. His voice is unique - soft yet breaking, emotive, yet pitch-perfect...his is an acquired taste perhaps, but it is one worth discovering.

His solo outfit is also wonderful, especially this fantastic 2012 album and song, Mid-Air - one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard:

Round 6

Only got to see her perform once, in the Fall of 1969, but I could see what all the excitement was about. Today she is often portrayed as a tormented soul, but Mike Tyson is often portrayed as a tortured soul, and when I saw her on the stage she was the Alpha Rocker.

Completely in command:

Janis Joplin

Would love to know who arranged this one:

FOGHORN LEGHORN
ELLA FITZGERALD
NIGEL PLANER
JOCKO and the ROCKETSHIP
BOBBY McFERRIN
JANIS JOPLIN

Well, maybe two; once is not enough:

I was in Denver a couple weeks ago; unfortunately, I didn't act soon enough so missed the chance to see Norah Jones at Red Rocks.

Since John Cole has been on the clock for a while I will skip and go. He posted since he has been on the clock but didn't make a pick? Anyway ...

Round 6

Roy Orbison

I didn't expect Roy to last this long? Just a spectacular voice with phenomenal range. This guy can sing with feeling. This goes into my I gotta pick this guy category.

So far:
Frankie Valli
Karen Carpenter
Frank Gorshin
James Earl Jones
The Hollies - harmony
Roy Orbison

Round 7

Neil Young

This going into my "so this guy is a professional singer?" category. A personal favorite of mine. A world class musician and songwriter with a very unique voice. But after 50+ albums recorded and 6+ decades singing professionally I would say he passes the test.

His voice fits his songs perfectly and it them his and only his.

Frankie Valli
Karen Carpenter
Frank Gorshin
James Earl Jones

People have a pretty rosy retrospect here. It's as though people are actively avoiding showing a recency bias.

Or perhaps it's just age:

Anyway, I'm going with the queen of pop music today:

Spoiler:

Beyoncé

Now that Mariah Carey's voice has faded considerably, I'd argue that Beyoncé has the best voice in music today.

"Irreplaceable" shows how effectively she hits the high notes

"If I Were A Boy" has a lot more low notes that are full of body and sound smooth and flawless.

Team SUB
1. Michael Buffer
2. Mel Blanc
3. Mariah Carey
4. Gus Johnson
5. Michael Winslow
6. Robert Plant
7. Beyonce

Pick #7

Time for another Texas singer...

Delbert McClinton

It hard to listen to him and not know he's for real.

Covering Otis:

Dom is up. Janis has already been taken.

I was going to mention this, along with the fact that there are good singers outside of Jazz.

Thread took a heavy dip with some of the more recent picks, so I won't make a joke about picking a certain singer for value, since it's possible she can pop up now.
